John Boyega recently discussed his vision for Star Wars at Florida Supercon 2025. He suggested his take would have significantly changed how established characters were handled and where the new stories would have gone.
John Boyega on how his version of Star Wars would’ve been different
During a panel at Florida Supercon 2025, John Boyega discussed how he would have approached the Star Wars sequel trilogy if he’d been a producer. He explained that his version would have been very different, but he would have kept the original characters from the first films involved.
He clarified that they have no plans to erase characters like Han Solo and Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars story. Instead, their priority is to finish those characters’ storylines and ensure they have a fitting conclusion, essentially passing the torch to the next generation of heroes (as reported by The Popverse).
As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really interested to hear John Boyega talking about the future heroes in these films. He basically said they’re not going to be instantly amazing – no one’s just going to pick up a lightsaber and suddenly be a master! They’re going to have to *earn* their skills, struggle like Luke, Leia, and everyone else. It’s cool to hear him say that, and honestly, it sounds like he’s still a little frustrated with how his character, Finn, was handled in the last trilogy – like they didn’t give him that same chance to grow organically.
As a huge Star Wars fan, hearing John Boyega talk about where the sequels could have gone really resonated with me. He mentioned he’d love to explore the older stories, specifically the tales from the Old Republic era, and build on that rich history. He even brought up ‘The Force Unleashed,’ which I think would have been amazing to see adapted – it’s got such a cool, different vibe that could have added a lot to the saga.
He said he’d aim to greatly expand the Star Wars universe, but always with respect for its established history. Any additions to that history, he emphasized, would need to fit within the existing framework and remain consistent with what’s already known.
Boyega explained how his ideas for the sequels differed from what actually happened. He specifically said Luke Skywalker would never simply vanish on a remote planet, and he wouldn’t have been portrayed as a projection. He felt the characters deserved a much more substantial role. The audience at the event reacted enthusiastically to his honest assessment, which offered a different direction for the films.
