John Boyega, famous for playing Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, recently disclosed his initial thoughts about Finn’s character arc. During a talk at Fan Expo Boston (reported by ScreenRant), Boyega expressed that he envisioned a narrative where Finn and Rey might evolve into “two Jedi,” possibly reflecting the intricate relationship between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. He shared with the audience, “I really believed they would have us resemble Obi-Wan and Darth Vader in some way, perhaps by having us turn against each other or something similar.
In simpler terms, John Boyega’s comments indicate that he initially thought Finn’s character in “The Force Awakens” would develop more into a powerful Force user, possibly even facing off against Rey. Finn is introduced as a stormtrooper turned Resistance ally who shows signs of being sensitive to the Force, such as during his encounter with Kylo Ren.
As the trilogy unfolded, Finn’s story veered away from initial expectations. In “The Last Jedi,” his part became less central, concentrating on a side plot with Rose Tico. While “The Rise of Skywalker” hinted at Finn’s Force potential, his promised Jedi journey was not fully realized, and the anticipated connection between Finn and Rey failed to develop as Boyega had hoped. Expressing his dismay over this missed chance, the actor commented, “It depends on treating the character well and fulfilling the arc that was frequently hinted at during the process.
Although Boyega might have reservations regarding Disney’s portrayal of Finn in the Star Wars series, he is open to rejoining the franchise if the narrative reflects his principles and provides a substantial role for him. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he displayed excitement about Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey in an upcoming movie, commenting, “I’m really looking forward… to see if it’s genuine, given the recent Star Wars announcements… I just hope that Daisy gets her moment to shine.” Additionally, Boyega believes Finn would have attempted to rescue Rey from Ben Solo, suggesting, “If Finn were there, he should have had a line saying, ‘Girl, leave him alone. Come back with me.’
Moving forward, there’s still ample opportunity for Finn’s character, along with other cast members from the sequel trilogy, to make a comeback. The most plausible scenario for this return might be within Daisy Ridley’s upcoming project, which is said to mark a fresh era in the Star Wars saga. It’s speculated that Finn, Poe Dameron (played by Oscar Isaac), new characters, and Naomi Ackie’s Jannah – who is thought to be Lando Calrissian’s daughter – could all appear together. With John Boyega expressing a desire to delve deeper into Finn’s development, the Star Wars universe may soon provide some much-anticipated insights and character progression for him in future ventures.
