Both Star Wars and Star Trek have incredibly dedicated fans, and it’s often assumed you have to choose one over the other. Star Trek actually started earlier, with the original series appearing in 1968 and eventually growing into a large film and TV franchise after gaining a devoted following. Star Wars quickly became popular when it hit theaters in 1977. For over 40 years, both franchises have remained important parts of science fiction and pop culture.
Although both Star Wars and Star Trek are set in space and gained popularity around the same period, they each tell their stories in distinct ways. John Boyega, known for playing Finn in the recent Star Wars films, recently discussed the comparison, highlighting what he believes Star Trek excels at: a slower, more deliberate pace (according to Gizmodo). He explained:
One thing I appreciate about Star Trek is that the stories allow characters to really talk things through. I think Star Wars could benefit from including more of those kinds of conversations.
When asked about potentially joining the Star Trek universe, Boyega firmly stated he would remain loyal to Star Wars. He jokingly explained his preference, saying, “I’ve got to stay on team. I’m a lightsaber guy.”

John Boyega has recently been sharing his thoughts on the direction of the Star Wars franchise, specifically detailing the changes he would have liked to see in the sequel trilogy.
Boyega felt he wouldn’t have excluded the original stars – Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and the late Carrie Fisher – but instead would have honored their contributions. He also would have started the new characters at a less powerful level, allowing audiences to connect with their growth, similar to how we watched Luke Skywalker develop in the original trilogy.
The actor expressed his disappointment with how Disney and Lucasfilm developed Finn’s story, saying he would only consider returning to Star Wars if the character was treated with respect. Even though the Star Wars sequel trilogy finished six years ago, the franchise continues to expand, with The Mandalorian and Grogu coming to theaters next year and a new trilogy planned.
Based on what John Boyega has said, it’s doubtful he’ll be back as his Star Wars character. He also doesn’t envision himself joining the cast of Star Trek in the future, though he did speak highly of the show and pointed out areas where it excels compared to Star Wars. If Lucasfilm listens to Boyega’s insights, they might be able to deliver the sequel trilogy that many fans were hoping for – and perhaps even bring him back to the franchise.
