John Aiken revealed the heartfelt final moments he shared with his Married At First Sight colleague, Mel Schilling, before she tragically passed away from cancer at the age of 54.
The 55-year-old relationship expert shared with A Current Affair on Wednesday that he had the chance to tell the woman directly how much she meant to both him and the public.
Aiken told Mel that he loved her and that she had ‘made a difference.’
Honestly, seeing her realize how many lives she’s impacted globally just wrecked me in the best way. Hearing her say that on TV… it was everything. Like, she finally gets it – she’s touched so many of us, everywhere. It was such a powerful moment, and I just… I can’t even explain how much it meant to me.
‘I took her husband an Irish whiskey, and we drank that. She had some memories.’
John explained that he saw Mel for a final time last week, just days before she died.
He described her as radiant and unforgettable, saying she had a vibrant personality and a stunning, glamorous presence.
‘But (she) had this huge heart.’
John hosted a special segment on Channel Nine honoring the relationship expert before Wednesday’s episode of Married At First Sight.
During an emotional moment, Aiken struggled to hold back tears while speaking fondly about his colleague and close friend.
I’m absolutely heartbroken to share that the Married At First Sight family has lost one of its own – the wonderful Mel Schilling. It’s such a sad day, and we’re all feeling the loss deeply. She was more than a colleague; she was a truly dear friend.
She had a way of brightening any space with her joyful personality and infectious smile. Being around her, especially on set, always boosted everyone’s spirits, as Aiken explained.
She was a delightful person who brought joy, laughter, and a genuine warmth that everyone appreciated being around.
She was a natural leader and truly inspiring. She never complained, always tackling challenges with a positive, hands-on approach.
‘Someone that has meant so much to all of us, and it’s not fair.
‘Married At First Sight won’t be the same without her.
My heart goes out to Gareth and their daughter, Maddie, during this difficult time. Let’s also remember Mel with fondness.
‘We love you.’
Channel Nine then aired a solemn message dedicating the following episode to Mel’s memory.
We’re so thankful for her kindness, honesty, and thoughtful perspective. She was a cherished part of our team and will always be considered part of the Married At First Sight family.
Mel’s husband, Gareth, shared the sad news on Tuesday that the dating expert had passed away shortly after disclosing her cancer had spread to her brain.
In a lengthy statement, he spoke of her love for him and their daughter Madison, 10.
Mel led the judging panel on the Australian version of the show for 12 seasons and was also a judge on the UK series for five seasons.
She previously shared that she would take a break from filming to focus on her family and well-being.
