Joey King’s sci-fi Uglies is now available to watch on Netflix
As a dedicated fan of Scott Westerfeld’s novels, I can confidently say that the release of “Uglies” on Netflix is like finding a long-lost friend! Ever since I devoured those books as a teenager, I’ve been eagerly awaiting this cinematic adaptation.
At last, fans of Scott Westerfeld’s novel “Uglies” can now stream it on Netflix, putting an end to their prolonged anticipation.
In the first book of the series, titled “Uglies,” the story unfolds in a future society where everyone undergoes cosmetic surgery at age sixteen, transforming them from being “Uglies” into “Pretties,” granting them entry to the urban landscape.
Tally Youngblood, played by Joey King, is moments away from having surgery that will integrate her into mainstream society. However, when her companion escapes, Tally sets off on an adventure that uncovers a disturbing truth which alters everything.
If you’re interested, the series “Uglies” has just been released globally on Netflix and is now ready for your viewing pleasure! (Released September 13)
The film Uglies was helmed by director McG. Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor, and Whit Anderson worked on the screenplay adaptation of Westerfeld’s novel. In addition to this star-studded cast, Chase Stokes, Brianne Tju, Keith Powers, Laverne Cox, Charmin Lee, and Jan Luis Castellanos are featured in the movie.
As well as starring in the lead role, King also served as an executive producer on the movie.
In her conversation with Digital Spy in 2020, she shared that this book series was one of her most cherished reads during her younger years. She would get utterly immersed and captivated by it.
“So being able to tell that story with a company that I love so much is really, really, exciting.”
Speaking with TUDUM, Westerfeld reminisced about his initial encounter with McG and how he instantly recognized him as the ideal director for the film. “He was holding a well-used copy of Uglies, marked up with over a hundred Post-it notes,” he shared.
On that particular day, we were capturing footage of Tally’s wild adventures, and McG posed the question, “Is SpagBol unpalatable when Tally tries it for the first time? Or does it become truly unpleasant only after she’s consumed it consistently for two weeks?
I found myself reflecting, “Wow, this person seems genuinely invested in the book. Not only does he appreciate the narrative itself, but he also notices and values the minute details that create a vivid and authentic world within the pages.
