Joe Locke’s “thrilling” and “complex” Wales-set mystery drama confirms UK release

Fans can look forward to seeing Joe Locke reprise his role in the final installment of the popular Netflix series, Heartstopper, this year. Plus, he’s landed another film role – production on Black Church Bay is moving forward with an anticipated release in 2026.

Rhys Marc Jones makes his feature film debut with this intriguing drama, starring Tom Cullen and Ben Locke. The story centers on a man (Cullen) whose life begins to fall apart after a close connection with a younger man (Locke), and examines how far he’ll go to keep his true identity hidden.

According to Screen Daily, Vertigo Releasing will distribute the film Black Church Bay in the UK and Ireland. The movie is scheduled to be shown in cinemas across both countries later this year.

Also featuring Marli Siu (known from BBC’s Everything I Know About Love) and Rakie Ayola (from Netflix’s Kaos), Black Church Bay was filmed in Anglesey, North Wales last year. Alex Polunin and Tristan Goligher produced the series.

Vertigo’s Taylor Haldane, acquisitions and sales manager, praised Rhys’s first film, noting that they were captivated by its immersive and intricate setting.

After finishing filming on Black Church Bay last year, Jones described the experience as a dream come true. She expressed deep gratitude for her frequent collaborators, cinematographer Lasse Ulvedal Tolbøll and designer Paix Robinson, and also thanked the new team members who helped bring her vision to life.

Besides Black Church Bay, Locke will also appear in Heartstopper Forever, which is set to premiere on Netflix later this year. The series creator, Alice Oseman, has assured fans that it will be a moving and satisfying conclusion to the popular show.

Black Church Bay is set to be released in UK and Irish cinemas in 2026.
