Jodie Foster wins her first-ever Emmy for ‘True Detective: Night Country’
As a longtime admirer and follower of Jodie Foster’s illustrious career, I can confidently say that her latest triumph at the Emmys is just another notch on the belt of an exceptional talent. Her performance as Liz Danvers in “True Detective: Night Country” was nothing short of mesmerizing, and it’s a testament to her versatility as an actor that she can revisit the role of a law enforcement officer three decades after her iconic portrayal of Clarice Starling.
A significant milestone has been achieved in Jodie Foster’s career resurgence: She has bagged her first-ever Emmy award, honoring her performance in “True Detective: Night Country.
At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards held on Sunday, Foster was presented with an award at Peacock Theater for her role as Liz Danvers, a sharp-tongued police chief who probed the mystery surrounding the vanishing of eight men in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. She received this accolade for her outstanding performance in a limited series.
30 years after her notable portrayal as an FBI agent Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs” (a role that won her an Oscar for Best Actress in 1991, following her first win for “The Accused” in 1988), she received acclaim for her performance in a HBO anthology series.
Previously, Foster left an indelible mark on audiences from the stage. In 2013, she presented an unforgettable speech during the Golden Globes when she received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for a lifetime of achievement in the entertainment industry. As a seasoned actor, she added a personal touch to her acceptance by openly discussing her sexual orientation and expressing gratitude towards her former partner, with whom she shares two children.
It seems I feel an unexpected need to express something I’ve never shared publicly before, which makes me a bit apprehensive,” Foster explained. “I came out about it ages ago, back in the Stone Age, during those charming times when a young woman would confide in trusted friends, family, and colleagues. Slowly but surely, she would reveal herself to everyone she knew, to everyone she met.
2021 saw Foster’s comeback on the awards circuit with a supporting actress nomination at the Oscars for her role in Netflix’s “Nyad.” In this film, she portrayed Bonnie Stoll, who was not only Diana Nyad’s (Annette Bening) best friend but also her coach in the long-distance swimming competition.
The fourth season of “True Detective,” titled “Night Country,” received a grand total of 19 Emmy nominations. This recognition is a testament to the outstanding success of this season, making it the most watched version of the series since its premiere in January.
