Jodie Comer “couldn’t believe” she was offered Prima Facie role

As a fan who has had the privilege of witnessing Jodie Comer‘s phenomenal performance in Prima Facie, I can confidently say that it was truly a life-changing experience for both her and the audience. Her journey from initial skepticism to absolute passion for the role is nothing short of inspiring.

In the play “Prima Facie“, Jodie Comer’s performance earned her several accolades, such as an Olivier and a Tony Award. However, she was not anticipating to be considered for this role.

Last night during a question-and-answer session (on September 8), Comer discussed the upcoming global cinema release of Prima Facie, sharing her thoughts from when she initially read Suzie Miller’s acclaimed play.

Initially, I found it hard to accept that the idea came to me, and then I developed an affection for Susie’s artistry which made it difficult to refuse. The experience was both scary and exhilarating,” she elaborated.

Reflecting on it, I exclaimed to myself, “What an adventure this will be, performing eight shows a week!” While we discuss facts daily in rehearsals, the atmosphere shifts dramatically when we stand before a live audience of 800 people. Their reactions and emotions add a unique dimension to our work.

I believe it’s safe to say that everyone on board found that encounter deeply moving, intense, and inspiring.

Initially, Tessa, portrayed by Comer, appears as a gifted young barrister whose life takes an unexpected turn when she finds herself grappling with the intersection of legal authority, the weight of evidence, and moral dilemmas following a surprising incident involving a fellow lawyer.

In 2022, the play was performed live on stage at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre, selling out each show. Later that year, when it was screened in cinemas, it broke records as the most profitable event cinema release of all time.

Initially premiered, “Prima Facie” will return to cinemas globally starting from September 12 via NT Live. However, Jodie Comer has yet to witness this play on the grand movie screens herself.

She mentioned that there have been numerous instances where she considered watching it. Specifically, she texted producer James Bierman after our London performance, which was before we made it to Broadway. In the message, she expressed her intention of watching it.

Later on, I pondered over the situation and opted against it. Post my visit to Broadway, I found myself drawn back home to catch a glimpse, my curiosity getting the better of me. Intriguingly enough, it turned out to be quite captivating, stunningly beautiful indeed.

At that stage, I held such high regard for Tessa in this specific situation, as well as admiration for myself, given the uncertainty, fear, and thrill of performing Prima Facie for the first time in New York.

Initially, Prima Facie will persist in its collaboration with charities such as the Schools Consent Project and Everyone’s Invited upon its return to movie theaters.

Prima Facie returns to cinemas from September 12.
