Joaquin Phoenix responds to Joker 2’s shocking ending

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Joker: Folie à Deux has left quite an indelible mark on me. The film, much like a particularly challenging boss battle, kept me on the edge of my seat throughout its duration.

Major spoilers for Joker: Folie à Deux follow.

Folie à Deux”), discussing how he was able to infuse a sense of compassion into an unexpected scene.

In the gaming world, I’d say it like this: “After being locked up in Arkham State Hospital, following the events of 2019’s Joker, I find myself entangled in a whirlwind romance with none other than Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel, played by Lady Gaga. The movie, directed by Todd Phillips, continues my story as I wait for my trial.

Towards the end, Arthur relinquishes his Joker identity and gets convicted for first-degree murder. Escaping from court and subsequently captured by law enforcement, the ex-Joker is returned to Arkham Asylum. There, he has a violent altercation with a younger inmate instead.

“There’s a warmth in that scene, which is nice,” Phoenix told IGN.

What I was aiming for in my thoughts was clear: Here’s a young fellow who’s sharing a joke with me, and I can sense his apprehension. Given that, I want to give him the chance to tell the whole joke. And it seems like he’s setting up a good punchline.

Initially, the character portrayed by Connor Storrie shares a joke with Arthur. However, instead of continuing their conversation, he viciously stabs Arthur multiple times and later self-inflicts a Glasgow smile, a gruesome scarring pattern on his own face.

Phillips stated, “I believe Arthur has come to terms with the concept, accepting the turmoil that self-acceptance is acceptable. And this is something he’s always wrestled with, as you can understand.

“It gives me comfort to believe that he passed away peacefully, remaining true to himself. Despite the uncertainty about what might be lurking downstairs, his unwavering optimism persists within him. The child asks him, ‘Do you want to hear a joke?’

He nods affirmatively, saying something along the lines of, “Absolutely, I get it. I understand the urge to bring joy through laughter.” So, in response, he offers a chuckle-worthy moment for the child instead.

For the filmmaker, the laugh right before Arthur’s death is an unmistakable sign of his optimism.

It seems his situation worsens once more, as it often does with Arthur, yet there’s a striking moment of optimism in this, as if to suggest that Arthur still harbors hope,” he commented.

As a gamer putting aside my usual gaming world for a moment, let me express how striking I found Joaquin in that particular scene. It was just a brief moment, you know, almost insignificant. But, disregarding the tragic element of his character’s impending doom, he managed to convey such raw emotion and beauty that it left an indelible mark on me.

At that instant, he’s gazing at the child, subtly laughing in a courteous manner, which suggests his admiration for the humor and for the individual’s bravery to perform. In a way, it’s a gesture of appreciation that he never received in the first movie.

Joker: Folie à Deux is now out in cinemas.
