Joaquin Phoenix exits new movie only days before filming
As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless productions, I must say the recent news about Joaquin Phoenix abandoning his upcoming film just days before its scheduled start is quite disheartening.
As a gaming enthusiast, I would rephrase it like this: “I recently learned that the lead actor, Joaquin Phoenix, won’t be appearing in an upcoming movie because he decided to step down just days before shooting was scheduled to begin. Consequently, filming has been put on hold.”
Titled as yet, a movie written collaboratively by Phoenix, Todd Haynes, and Jon Raymond, was set to depict a romantic story between two characters (Phoenix and Danny Ramirez) from the 1930s era. It’s been reported that this project will feature some sexually explicit content.
The movie, where the leading pair were planning to move from California to Mexico, seems unlikely to be released now, as IndieWire reports that Phoenix withdrew from the production a month ago, only five days prior to when filming was scheduled to start in Guadalajara.
As the project has progressed significantly towards completion, Deadline states that the project appears to be at a standstill because there are no plans to replace Phoenix’s role. This leaves many crew members uncertain about their compensation.
Haynes, known for his notable works such as “Carol” and “Far from Heaven”, had previously hinted about an unrealized project last year. He shared (through IndieWire) a tantalizing glimpse: “The upcoming film is an original script that I co-developed with Joaquin Phoenix, inspired by the concepts and ideas he presented to me.”
“Jon Raymond, Joaquin, and I collaborated on the script for this project, with all three of us credited as storytellers. We anticipate starting production early next year. The film is a gay love story set in 1930s Los Angeles, and Joaquin encouraged me to push boundaries by saying ‘let’s go further.’ This movie will carry an NC-17 rating.”
During an interview during the promotional tour for “May December”, Haynes shared that Phoenix was instrumental in bringing the film to life. He elaborated: “The idea originated from his courage, his eagerness to surpass boundaries, and to delve into the uneasy aspects of this relationship. Yet, it seemed like a natural progression throughout the whole process.”
In the near future, Phoenix will appear in cinemas once more, joining Lady Gaga on screen, as he takes up his Oscar-winning character of Arthur Fleck again for the follow-up movie titled “Joker: Madness Duet“, which is the sequel to the 2019 film directed by Todd Phillips.
The sequel to the Joker, titled “Joker: Madness Shares Company,” is set to hit cinemas on October 4th. If you can’t wait that long, you can already purchase the original Joker on Blu-ray or stream it online.
