Joanne Froggatt and Maxine Peake’s “disturbing” true-crime drama is now on Netflix

The true-crime drama starring Joanne Froggatt and Maxine Peake, titled “See No Evil: The Moors Murders,” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.

In 2006, the two-part drama series first aired on ITV. It stars actors from Downton Abbey (Froggatt) and Three Girls (Peake), alongside Sean Harris known for Mission: Impossible, Connor McIntyre from Coronation Street, and Susan Twist who was in Doctor Who.

Titled “See No Evil,” this story revolves around a series of murders that occurred in and around Manchester during the 1960s, which were perpetrated by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.

In this portrayal, Harris and Peake take on the notorious roles of a killer duo, while Froggatt assumes the part of Maureen Smith, Hindley’s sister, who serves as our main perspective character. Extensive interviews were conducted with relatives of the victims and detectives associated with the case during an extensive research phase.

Because “See No Evil” is an older movie, critical reviews may not be easily found online, however, fans have expressed their thoughts about it throughout the years.

On Letterboxd, the show has a 3.4/5 weighted average based on over 500 ratings.

This review praises the drama for its careful approach, as it deliberately steers clear of sensationalizing the grim subject matter. Instead, it concentrates on Smith, Maureen (his wife), Myra’s sister, and the ensuing police investigation, rather than focusing on the two perpetrators themselves.

In this production, both Maxine Peake and Sean Harris deliver powerful performances that cast a chilling spell as Hindley and Brady. Meanwhile, Matthew McNulty and Joanne Froggatt also shine, offering compelling portrayals.

On IMDb, the film “See No Evil” shares a comparable score of 7 out of 10. Viewers’ reviews commend the movie for its strong acting performances across the board and its thoughtful approach to dealing with a deeply unsettling and haunting theme.
