Jimmy Page cannot stop being sued over Dazed and Confused

Jake Holmes’ “Dazed and Confused” has had quite a journey. Originally composed and, notably, copyrighted by the American musician himself, he performed it during one of Jimmy Page’s Yardbirds’ shows. Notably, the drummer for the Yardbirds, Jim McCarty, appreciated Jake’s music.

To such an extent that they collaborated on this particular melody, which turned out to be a regular number in their performances with the Yardbirds. When Page departed from the Yardbirds to contribute to the formation of Led Zeppelin, he also brought “Dazed and Confused” along. This song found its place on their debut album, released in 1968.

At first, Holmes didn’t challenge Page over the loan of the melody. Zeppelin altered several lyrics and guitar sections, yet the overall structure of the tune belonged to Holmes. However, when they unveiled their debut album, the songwriting credit for “Dazed and Confused” was given solely to Page, with no reference to Holmes.

Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page sued again over “Dazed and Confused”

During the early 80s, Holmes reached out to Page regarding songwriting credits, yet it seemed like his message went unanswered. It wasn’t until 2010 that Holmes decided to pursue legal action over the issue. The dispute was ultimately resolved outside of court, but since then, Zeppelin’s first album now lists the song as being “inspired by Jake Holmes,” in addition to Page’s credit.

As a hardcore gamer diving into the world of rock documentaries, I’ve stumbled upon an intriguing new release about none other than Led Zeppelin titled “Becoming Led Zeppelin“. In this film, there’s a piece of “Dazed and Confused” that seems to trace back to the Yardbirds. Given that the legal fuss surrounding their debut album seems to revolve around this very song, the original singer-songwriter, Holmes, is stepping up to demand justice by filing a lawsuit for the cover version. Apparently, he’s yet to receive his due credit as a songwriter in Zeppelin’s rendition of the classic tune.

As a dedicated admirer, I can share that, as reported by Reuters, I (Holmes) am pursuing compensation for each instance where my song is misused. That certainly encompasses the utilization of my melody within the Zeppelin documentary.

The problem lies in the fact that “Dazed and Confused” is strongly associated with Led Zeppelin, making it difficult for the band to omit it from films about them. There might be speculation about whether or not this song will be removed from future versions of the material.
