Jimmy Kimmel continues to be in the news following the unexpected removal of his talk show from television. The late-night host recently explained what happened leading up to his suspension.
While on , Kimmel shared a story about how he found out his show was cancelled. He explained that he had to hide in a bathroom to take a call from ABC executives. They told him, “We want to calm things down, and we’re worried about what you might say on tonight’s show,” as he recounted to Entertainment Weekly. They then informed him that they had decided to cancel the show.
As Jimmy Kimmel shared, the days after the incident were a real emotional whirlwind, and honestly, I thought, “That’s it, I’m done with television.” Thankfully, Jimmy Kimmel Live! was back on ABC on September 23rd. He started the show with a monologue that didn’t hold back, taking plenty of shots at Donald Trump and even criticizing the FCC. According to early Nielsen ratings, about 6.26 million people watched on traditional TV – that’s more than three times the show’s normal viewership!

During his show on the night of Sept. 15, the late-night host discussed the shooting, stating, “Over the weekend, we saw some particularly low behavior from the MAGA group, who were strongly trying to portray the shooter – the person who murdered Charlie Kirk – as anything *but* one of their own, and attempting to gain political advantage from the situation.”
Another Late Night Show Has Also Been Axed
Charlie Kirk was killed during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10th. Police have accused 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of the murder. Nexstar stated they “strongly object to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel regarding the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets.” Disney’s ABC then removed the show from its schedule.
Originally, ABC was the sole network prepared to bring back Jimmy Kimmel Live!, but others eventually agreed. On September 26th, Nexstar stated it would restart broadcasting the well-known late-night talk show on its 32 ABC stations, and Sinclair announced it was also returning Kimmel to its 38 ABC stations. In the meantime, CBS is maintaining its choice to . The talk show host discussed his future on his program, stating, “Next year will be our final season. The network is concluding The Late Show in May [2026].”
