Jimmy Kimmel blasts Time’s AI-focused Person of the Year pick as he reignites vicious feud with Elon Musk

Jimmy Kimmel quickly criticized Time magazine after they revealed their 2025 Person of the Year cover, which celebrated those they called the ‘Architects of AI’.

During Thursday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the 58-year-old host dramatically showed off the latest magazine cover to his audience, then followed it up with a series of jokes. He jokingly referred to the group of eight influential tech leaders featured on the cover – including Elon Musk – as ‘the eight dorks of the apocalypse.’

Jimmy Kimmel announced that Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg, and five other leading figures in the world of artificial intelligence had been named Person of the Year, a decision that was met with strong disapproval from the audience.

As a huge follower of the AI world, I was really struck by the latest magazine cover! It features so many of the brilliant minds driving this revolution – Mark Zuckerberg from Meta, Elon Musk with xAI, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Lisa Su from AMD, Jensen Huang at Nvidia, Demis Hassabis leading Google DeepMind, Dario Amodei from Anthropic, and even Fei-Fei Li, the Stanford professor and co-founder of World Labs. It’s amazing to see them all together – truly the people shaping our future!

Kimmel pretended to be surprised by the audience’s response, playfully saying he’d hoped for a bigger reaction. Then, he shifted the focus to the group’s impressive name.

He said, ‘People refer to them as architects, but it makes you think: shouldn’t an architect understand how their building actually functions? And shouldn’t they know if it might even become dangerous?’

Jimmy Kimmel pointed out the irony of Time magazine naming those developing artificial intelligence as Person of the Year, given the widespread public worry that AI will take people’s jobs. He joked that the very people causing job losses were being honored.

He then started making fun of the cover’s appearance, asking the producers to show it again so he could continue his criticism.

He jokingly pointed out that despite all the advancements in AI graphics, the results often look similar to what could be achieved in Photoshop from 2007.

Oh my gosh, you HAVE to see this! Apparently, according to Time magazine, this incredible digital painting by Jason Seiler is a total tribute to that iconic photo – you know, the one of the construction workers casually eating lunch on that beam way up high above New York City? The original was taken in 1932, and it’s just… breathtaking that he recreated it so perfectly!

The magazine explained its decision in an article, expressing concern about how quickly and unpredictably artificial intelligence is developing.

According to Time magazine, thanks to leaders like Huang, Son, and Altman, we’re rapidly and perhaps recklessly accelerating towards a future increasingly shaped by automation and filled with unknowns.

The magazine named President-elect Donald Trump its 2024 Person of the Year.

Kimmel’s latest takedown of Musk also followed their ongoing public feud.

Last year, Trump called comedian Jimmy Kimmel a ‘worthless, ridiculous mouthpiece for propaganda’ on X (formerly Twitter) after Kimmel discussed Trump’s potential win in the 2024 election on his show.

Returning to air the following night, Kimmel gleefully read Musk’s insult aloud.

I talked to the audience last night about my feelings on recent events and how much I’ll miss having a democratic process, and I received a lot of responses. The most public one came from Elon Musk, who tweeted this morning that I’m a ‘nonsense propaganda puppet.’ But, you know, at least my kids still like me!

The comment referred to Elon Musk’s daughter, Vivian Wilson, who is transgender and has been openly critical of her father. She previously called him a ‘serial adulterer’.

Doubling down, Kimmel continued his attack.

He said the person who allegedly paid a million dollars a day for votes for Donald Trump was accusing him of being a puppet for propaganda. He then challenged that person, referencing Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter and claiming the platform itself is essentially a propaganda machine.

He said that if he tried for two weeks to describe Elon Musk in just four words, he couldn’t come up with anything better than ‘insufferable nonsense propaganda puppet’.

Kimmel jokingly said he was going to announce a new project in January, but Musk had spoiled the surprise.

A puppet version of the show’s host appeared on the screen, accompanied by the title ‘Insufferable Nonsense Propaganda Puppet’.

‘And now the surprise is ruined thanks to Elon Musk!’ Kimmel joked.

He ended the discussion by playfully teasing both Elon Musk and Donald Trump, sharing a past comment Trump had made about Musk’s companies.

According to a recent quote, when Elon Musk requested assistance with his various government-supported projects at the White House, I reportedly had the power to demand anything from him – and he would have complied.

Kimmel then explained what he meant by ‘beg,’ and ended with a final playful insult: ‘I’m sure you two will get along famously. I bet his hand will fit perfectly… well, you get the idea.’
