The show typically starts with funny moments, even when discussing difficult news. But the host isn’t afraid to show his emotions, and he did so on Monday night. He paused the usual jokes to talk about the death of Alex Pretti, a Minneapolis ICU nurse killed by federal agents, and became visibly emotional while doing so.
I, like many of you, spent the weekend glued to my phone, and I was horrified by what I saw happening in Minneapolis. Video after video showed people being ripped away from their families – American citizens targeted simply for having an accent, and even young children and babies being tear-gassed and separated from their parents. It was one terrible act after another, carried out by a group of badly trained and poorly led officers who were acting like thugs. They committed cruel, heartless, and frankly criminal acts.
Jimmy Kimmel has recently focused his nightly monologues on the irony surrounding President Trump’s administration. However, current events have become so extraordinary that they’ve even surpassed the need to criticize the president’s words and deeds. He went on to say:
I recently came across some incredibly disturbing footage – videos clearly showing the execution of an American citizen by ICE agents, and the lack of accountability is frankly appalling. The justification offered is flimsy at best. They’re claiming Renee Good’s SUV was ‘weaponized,’ and focusing on the fact that Alex Pretti, who was with her, had a licensed firearm – the same rights people fiercely defended during the Rittenhouse case. But here’s the crucial part: Alex never even touched the gun. Agents took it from him before they opened fire, shooting an ICU nurse ten times. And now they’re trying to tell us it was justified? It’s a deeply unsettling situation, and the lack of remorse or admission of error is truly disturbing.
If you supported this, is this the safety and security you expected? Things are terrible right now. My wife and I have family in Minneapolis who are scared to send their children to school or even go to work. I can only imagine how frightening this must be for people of color. What’s going to happen, and what’s the solution? Is the intention to repeat this in other cities that didn’t vote for Donald Trump? Does anyone think this is effective leadership?
Jimmy Kimmel Doesn’t Hold Back from Making a Stark Point About the Current State of America
Look, every situation has multiple angles, and Donald Trump immediately pointed to guns as the issue here – the very same guns so many people believe we have a right to own. But honestly, like a lot of people, I really connected with Jimmy Kimmel’s feeling that things in America are getting increasingly difficult and concerning. It just feels like we’re at a really troubling point.
It’s time we found some common ground. Surely, we can all agree that peaceful protesters – even everyday people like mothers running errands or nurses helping others – shouldn’t be killed by the very police officers we pay to keep us safe. And when someone is murdered, shouldn’t there at least be a proper investigation?
Jimmy Kimmel pointed out a stark reality that’s increasingly difficult to miss: with social media now offering numerous perspectives and real footage of events, information once limited to traditional news broadcasts is widely available.
Let’s be direct: if a group like ISIS had done what we’re seeing in that video, there would be immediate military action and widespread patriotic displays. I urge you to watch the video, even though it’s disturbing, and decide for yourself if this reflects the values of making America great. If it doesn’t, we need to speak up. This mistreatment must end, because the people responsible are not acting like true leaders.
Before the show continued and we went to commercials, Jimmy Kimmel took a quick moment to honor Alex Pretti. It was a really nice touch, honestly.
Alex Pretti, a dedicated ICU nurse who cared for veterans, was a true patriot. Jimmy Kimmel emotionally shared a video of Pretti paying tribute to a veteran patient who had died, and concluded by saying, “Alex Pretti, may he rest in peace.”
