Jim Morrison grave site’s stolen bust recovered ‘by chance’ almost four decades later
Police in Paris have managed to retrieve a statue commemorating the late Jim Morrison, who has been deceased for almost four decades, that went missing from his burial place.
Following a 37-year gap, the statue of Jim Morrison, which was taken in 1988 from the Père Lachaise cemetery, has been discovered! This was shared by the Paris Regional Judicial Police Directorate on their Instagram account last Friday.

During a separate probe carried out by the police, the beloved emblem cherished by the singer’s followers was found.
In 1981, a sculpture created by Croatian artist Mladen Mikulin was put on Morrison’s grave as a tribute to mark the 10th anniversary of the Doors frontman’s demise. However, this sculpture vanished only seven years later, leaving Parisian officials and fans equally bewildered.
In 1990, they swapped out the gravestone that had been worn down since the ’80s due to damage, and engraved it with the epitaph “True to His Spirit” in Greek.
But the bust remained lost, at least until its surprising rediscovery last week.
During a court-ordered search at the Paris court, this unexpected find was made, as confirmed by the Paris Prosecutor’s Office to CNN on Tuesday.
Officials did not share details concerning the purpose of the search.
For decades, people have been drawn to the burial place of Jim Morrison, the iconic frontman for The Doors, who tragically passed away in 1971 at only 27 years old. As per Paris’ official site, his grave is among the most frequently visited in the city.
Morrison resided in Paris for four months prior to his sudden passing. According to the site, he initially stayed at the George V Hotel in the spring of 1971 and later moved to 17 rue Beautreillis, where he cohabited with Pamela Courson. Tragically, he was discovered deceased in that apartment’s bathtub; his death was attributed to heart failure.
According to the website, he relocated to the city to kickstart his literary career. He loved strolling around Place des Vosges and Île Saint-Louis. He’d often buy bottles of white wine from the old bar L’Alexandre before getting tipsy at Rosebud and spending time on the quays with second-hand booksellers or at Shakespeare and Company bookstore.
As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share that I recently received news which, much like finding a missing piece of a cherished artifact in a film, brings a sense of satisfaction. According to a representative from Morrison’s estate, they too are “elated” upon hearing about the recovery of the bust.
As a movie enthusiast, it’s heartening to learn that a piece of history – a bust that was significant to Jim and his family, meant enough for them to place it on his grave – has been found. Now, I can only wonder about its condition and what awaits us in the process of restoration.
