Jim Caviezel Opens Up on the Extreme Challenges of Reprising Jesus in Passion 2 After 20 Years

Actor Jim Caviezel, known for his roles in films like “The Sound of Freedom” and “The Thin Red Line,” will once again play Jesus in the upcoming sequel to Mel Gibson’s controversial film, “The Passion of the Christ.” Titled “The Resurrection of the Christ,” this project is set after the death of Jesus, focusing on the resurrection. In a rather mysterious interview, the Hollywood outcast hinted that he wants to “appreciate this one more” and suggested that the sequel will necessitate a different approach or perspective.

Approximately two and a half decades since the initial movie, Caviezel is gearing up for what promises to be a demanding part. In an interview with Raymond Arroyo on the Arroyo Grande podcast, the actor acknowledged that age might be something he needs to take into account.

“So I’m 57… But it hurts a lot more. It’s physically a lot harder.”

Caviezel likewise opened up about his experiences during the filming of the first movie. The challenge was both physical (it’s known that he, along with another team member, were struck by lightning) and emotional. It seems this is why he expresses his intention to “savor” working on The Passion of the Christ 2.

I aim to appreciate this one more than the last one; I found myself out of my depth with it. Regarding the other one, I had doubts about its authenticity since it wasn’t in Aramaic. I remember saying, “We’re not going forward with this.” However, my faith is strong in Mel [Gibson]’s work.

It’s clear that this opportunity won’t come around twice. Frankly, I can’t imagine another chance like this. Back then, someone advised me to keep a journal. I replied, ‘My memory is my journal.’ But looking back, I wish I had written down some of the experiences I lived through.

Will Mel Gibson Be Able to Achieve Success Again With ‘The Passion of the Christ 2’?

Known for stirring debates in Hollywood, Mel Gibson is preparing to step back into the director’s chair for The Passion of the Christ 2. This project will begin filming this year, signifying a revival of these characters over two decades since the initial movie caused a sensation at the box office and ranked among the top-earning films of 2004.

In the initial movie, it’s undeniable that the intensity of Mel Gibson’s portrayal of Christ’s physical suffering significantly influenced its presentation. The movie, titled The Passion of the Christ, was startlingly violent for many viewers, as they had previously only visualized such scenes from their readings in the Bible. Unlike the graphic depiction of the Passion, the Resurrection is not as gruesome, suggesting that any potential sequel might focus more on the spiritual and introspective aspects of the narrative. Gibson and Caviezel, if they decide to create a sequel, will have the task of crafting an engaging story that appeals to a wide audience, irrespective of their religious beliefs, without relying on shock or violence.
