Jhonata Diniz is the UFC Vegas 95 fighter to watch

As a seasoned gamer with an eye for combat sports and a heart that beats for the UFC, I can’t help but feel a thrill coursing through my veins as I delve into the upcoming showdown at UFC Vegas 95. The heavyweight division is about to see a potential breakout star in Jhonata Diniz.

A week prior to their title bout in Perth, UFC APEX hosts UFC Vegas 95 on Saturday, featuring a rematch between heavyweight contenders Marcin Tybura and Serghei Spivac. In their initial encounter in 2020, it was the former who secured a unanimous decision victory.

Beyond two encounters featuring ranked bantamweight women (Yana Santos vs Chelsea Chandler, Karol Rosa vs Pannie Kianzad), this card doesn’t have significant impact on divisions but it’s rich with opportunities for breakout performances. And when we talk about heavyweights and breakout moments, there’s one individual who could leave the biggest mark – Jhonata Diniz.

As a gamer, I’ve stepped into the Kickboxing ring alongside some heavyweights, like the Dutchmen Hesdy Gerges and Rico Verhoeven, and battled for numerous titles, with my most significant achievements coming in Absolute Championship Berkut. My journey began back in 2009 and continued until 2022, where I left an indelible mark on the sport.

In the same year that he concluded his kickboxing journey, Diniz began MMA and proved victorious in each of his initial three bouts, as none of his rivals lasted beyond the first round. He extended this winning streak into the opening quarter of 2023 by knocking out his next pair of opponents within the first round apiece. This impressive performance earned him a spot on Dan White’s Contenders Series, where he faced fellow Brazilian Eduardo Neves.

Once more, I ruled supreme, wrapping up the task in just three minutes and fifteen seconds, using nothing but my bare knuckles to seal a UFC contract. My first bout in the Octagon was scheduled seven and a half months later against Austen Lane – a fellow DWCS alum who’s famously known for being Greg Hardy’s fourth professional opponent in the NFL.

Jhonata Diniz fights Karl Williams at UFC Vegas 95

For the very first time in his professional journey, Diniz encountered hardship, losing control of a take-down and finding himself pinned on the mat, which took him beyond the initial round. Yet, this didn’t make a difference because he later managed to block another take-down attempt and knocked out Lane midway through the second round instead.

In his second project for the Octagon, he is matched against Karl Williams, another DWCS recruit, who usually fights in a way that contrasts significantly with his approach.

Starting with his professional debut in 2021, Williams has been a consistent scorer across his 11 fights, with just three of his victories (and one loss) occurring via stoppage. His first contract fight was against Jimmy Lawson, followed by his promotional debut against Lukasz Brzeski where he delivered a solid performance, securing a unanimous decision win. Subsequent fights against veterans Chase Sherman and Justin Tafa have resulted in similar outcomes for him.

Historically, the UFC’s heavyweight division has been less deep compared to other divisions. However, with fighters like Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum, Alistair Overeem, and Junior Dos Santos retiring, and Alexander Volkov, Sergei Pavlovich, Ciryl Gane, and Tom Aspinall rising, the division has shown a noticeable revitalization. Yet, with fighters such as Derrick Lewis and Marcin Tybura still acting as gatekeepers against newcomers with mixed success, there is room for more fresh talent to emerge.

It appears that Diniz, with his knack for delivering impressive knockouts, seems more aesthetically appealing in terms of fighting style. On the other hand, Williams aims to demonstrate that his strategic approach is a stronger pathway to victory. Regardless, their upcoming fight will decide who advances higher within the division.
