Jessie J opened up to her fans on Tuesday, sharing a heartfelt and emotional video reflecting on a very difficult 2023, which she described as one of the toughest years of her life.
The singer, 37, shared a tearful close-up photo of her eye on Instagram, telling fans that this year has been difficult and she’s been struggling with low spirits.
She encouraged her 14.2 million followers to embrace their feelings, acknowledging that this honest post would likely receive a lot of attention, but stating that didn’t matter.
Despite the pressure to appear happy and positive, many people experience sadness, pain, and reflection around this time of year – either alongside joyful moments, or even on its own. It’s okay to acknowledge those difficult feelings.
Jessie shared that this year has been challenging for everyone, but also incredibly special for her – a truly difficult yet magical time, both in her personal life and career.
I’ve been feeling really down this week. It’s the first break I’ve taken from work and being around people in months, and all my pent-up sadness is coming out. I’m crying a lot and just trying to process everything by writing it all down. Honestly, it’s the lowest I’ve felt in a long time.

I’ve been realizing lately that all sorts of feelings and thoughts I’ve been carrying around are finally coming up, and honestly, it feels amazing to just let them out. Seriously, if you’re holding anything in, please don’t! Just express yourself – it makes such a difference.
It’s okay to not be okay. We’re human, and experiencing sadness is a natural part of life. When someone you care about is upset, instead of telling them not to cry, offer comfort and support by simply being there for them.
Thinking of anyone else going through a tough time right now. There aren’t any easy answers, but I want you to know I understand, and things are really hard.
Jessie J became emotional and cried while performing a song dedicated to her late bodyguard, Dave, during her last concert of the year at the Virgin Media and O2 Priority by Candlelight event earlier this month.
She looked stunning in a brown silk dress with an off-the-shoulder design while singing “I’ll Never Know Why” from her 2025 album, Don’t Tease Me With a Good Time.
The event came just weeks before the seventh anniversary of Dave’s passing in 2018.
Jessie shared on Monday how much she misses her older brother and has been telling her two-year-old son, Sky, stories about their adventures together.
She shared on Instagram how much she struggles with the finality of death. She said she’d do anything to have a new video of them together, but for now, she’ll keep rewatching old ones until they can be together again, addressing her brother affectionately.

I’m thinking of you and miss you terribly. I often tell Sky about all the fun trips we took together. He believes you’re living among the clouds and sends you lots of love.
‘If you hear me talking to you today, come say hi. 7 years.’
Shortly after Dave died in 2018, Jessie shared a post remembering their close friendship, calling him ‘family’.
She wrote about the immense love for her children, saying it was everything. They shared so much joy, often laughing until tears streamed down their faces almost every day.
We built a world together with Penelope and her blue Shetland pony, sharing our hopes and fears. You’ve been more than just someone I rely on – you’re family. Four years of us together.
I’ll never forget when you got me that amazing blue Shetland pony cake after The Voice Australia! And remember how much fun we had seeing Fifty Shades and laughing throughout the whole movie?
I’ll always remember you texting me funny messages during breaks while I was filming The Voice. And those late-night walks we took just to clear our heads. It was always a competition to see who could yell ‘banana’ the fastest!

In June, Jessie shared that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She then had a mastectomy and surgery to rebuild the breast.
Jessie recently revealed that although she feels fortunate her cancer was detected early, there’s still a possibility it could return.
Jessie explained that she immediately called her mother after learning about her diagnosis, and shared the sad words she spoke to her.
Jessie recalled immediately calling her mother and telling her, “I can’t give up, because I have Skye to think about,” as she shared with ABC News.
Jessie shared that she feels incredibly fortunate her cancer was detected early on. She described herself as ‘super lucky’ to have caught it so soon.
Thankfully, it wasn’t serious. We know there’s a possibility it could return, but for now, we’re focusing on enjoying life.
The mother-of-one compared her cancer surgery to an episode of Black Mirror.
The singer revealed she had cosmetic surgery but dislikes being fully anesthetized, describing the experience as feeling like something out of a ‘Black Mirror’ episode.
