With the Academy Award nominations revealed on Thursday, Jessie Buckley is seen as a strong contender to represent Britain and Ireland at the 2026 ceremony.
The Irish actress has earned an Actress in a Leading Role nomination for her role in Hamnet.
Having already won a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice award this month, Jessie is nominated for another award at the ceremony in Los Angeles on March 16th. This nomination comes four years after she was recognized for her work in The Lost Daughter.
The category of Best Actress is expected to be very competitive this year, with strong performances from Jessie, Rose Byrne (for ‘If I Had Legs I would Kick You’), Kate Hudson (‘Song Sung Blue’), Renate Reinsve (‘Sentimental Value’), and Emma Stone (‘Bugonia’).
Many were surprised that Paul Mescal, who acted alongside Jessie Buckley in ‘Hamnet’, wasn’t nominated for Best Supporting Actor at Thursday’s awards announcement.
While Paul was nominated for an award by the Golden Globes and SAG, the Academy Awards will see a different group of actors competing: Benecio Del Toro (for One Battle After Another), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Delroy Lindo (Sinners), Sean Penn (One Battle After Another), and Stellan Skarsgard (Sentimental Value).
As a huge fan, I was really surprised and disappointed to see Cynthia Erivo left out of the nominations this year. After getting recognized last year for the first Wicked film, I truly thought she’d be a shoo-in for Wicked For Good too. It felt like a major oversight!
The highly anticipated sequel to Wicked, starring Ariana Grande, received no nominations for the 2026 Oscars. This is a significant change from the first film, which earned 10 nominations in 2025, including a nomination for Best Picture.
The biggest showdown at the awards on March 16th will be between Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio, both competing for the prestigious Best Actor award.
Timothée Chalamet, age 30, was nominated for his role in Marty Supreme, and Leonardo DiCaprio, 51, received a nomination for One Battle Another. They’ll be competing against Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Michael B. Jordan, and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).
Ryan Coogler’s film, Sinners, had a historic morning, receiving a record-breaking 16 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. This surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations, which was held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land.
The horror movie is among the ten films nominated for the award, alongside Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Train Dreams.
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony is happening in less than two months, on March 15th, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman revealed the nominees for all 24 awards, including the first-ever casting award, during a live broadcast from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
There are just over 11,000 members of the Academy with individuals split into 19 branches.
The work of creating a film involves many different teams, including directors, writers, costume and makeup artists, publicists, and, most prominently, the actors themselves.
Out of the Academy’s 11,000 members, nearly 10,000 actually cast ballots for the Oscars. The remaining members have emeritus status and don’t participate in voting.
In the last 14 years, the Academy has significantly grown its membership. A 2012 report in the Los Angeles Times showed the organization had around 5,800 members then.
Nominees were selected using a ranked-choice voting system, where voters listed their choices in order of how much they preferred them.
After the votes were tallied, candidates who received enough votes and fit within the category’s nomination limit were chosen.
If a candidate doesn’t get enough votes to win immediately, ranked-choice voting then comes into play.
During the annual film awards, prizes will be given out in 24 different categories. Most categories have five people competing for the award, but Best Picture has ten nominees.
Best Picture nominations are determined by eligible members from all 19 Academy branches.
The Academy Awards voting for all categories happens online and is kept secret. The results are counted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, a firm that handles the accounting independently.
Conan O’Brien is returning to host the Oscars, after his appearance last year helped the show achieve its highest viewership in five years.
The 98th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood. You can watch the show live on ABC in the United States and in over 200 countries around the world.
