Jessica Simpson left L.A. for Nashville. Now she’s released her first single in almost 17 years

Jessica Simpson, who’s known for her successful career as a pop singer, fashion entrepreneur, television personality, and acclaimed author, is revisiting her musical beginnings.

On Friday, Simpson unveiled “Use My Heart Against Me,” a new single from her forthcoming EP titled “Nashville Canyon, Part 1.” This is Simpson’s first release in nearly 17 years since her last project, the 2008 album “Do You Know.

In an interview with The Cut alongside her sister, Ashlee Simpson Ross (aged 44), who is a musician, mentioned that she’s embarking on a fresh phase in her life via music. “This heartrending ordeal I experienced was the most profound and illuminating therapy I’ve ever undergone,” she shared.

Back in January, it was made public that Bruce Simpson and his ex-NFL player spouse Eric Johnson had parted ways following a ten-year marriage. As a family, they are parents to three kids: Maxwell “Maxi” Drew (12), Ace Knute (11), and Birdie Mae (5). Just prior to the announcement, their $18 million Hidden Hills home was put up for sale.

Here are 20 successful business ventures by female celebrities, ranging from lingerie empires to flourishing cosmetics brands with valuations in the millions and billions of dollars.

Simpson shared that the concept for her rockabilly EP originated during her daughter Maxwell’s birthday celebration in Nashville. Instead of asking for the traditional “Happy Birthday” song, Maxwell, who was 11 at the time, requested her mother to sing Hank Williams’ “I Saw the Light.” This unexpected request sparked a flood of memories for Simpson about making her first record at 14 years old.

She informed Simpson Ross, ‘It dawned on me then: I must live in Nashville.’ From that moment on, she began exploring property options there.

Following her move back to Nashville and pursuing her musical dreams, Simpson shared that she was able to explore different musical avenues, free from the constraints of a dominating record label. Her journey in music began in gospel, and she gained notoriety when she joined Columbia Records in 1997. Subsequently, she put out popular pop tracks like “I Wanna Love You Forever” and “With You.

In an interview, I admitted that my early music output was quite scattered, lacking a clear direction. It seemed like I was merely chasing pop music trends, disregarding personal preference. Truth be told, there were times when I wasn’t even passionate about the songs I was producing – it was simply what the label required of me. Growing up as a rule-abiding individual, I always adhered to their demands.

Jessica Simpson is commemorating six years of being sober by sharing an Instagram story, taking us back to the year 2017, when she took her last sip of alcohol.

She attributes the emotional depth in her latest music to the response her 2020 memoir, “Open Book,” received from her audience. In this bestselling book, she candidly shares her battles with addiction, body image issues, and toxic relationships. It sold over half a million copies within just 14 weeks and was later transformed by Amazon FreeVee into a scripted television series.

To Simpson, “Nashville Canyon, Part 1” isn’t about making a hit record.

In an interview with The Cut, Simpson expressed that he was seeking something more organic and authentic. He mentioned that this vibe is hard to find in L.A. at the moment as it feels overly formulaic. His goal was to shatter these conventions for his own artistic growth. Regardless of whether anything becomes a hit, he’s independent from record labels and doesn’t anticipate his music to be played on the radio.

The EP will be released March 21.
