Jessica Rowe reveals how her humiliating sacking from Channel Nine was leaked on the eve of the Logie Awards: ‘I remember bursting into tears’
As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I find Jessica Rowe’s resilience and grace in the face of adversity truly inspiring. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the strength that lies within each of us when we are faced with challenging circumstances.
Jessica Rowe candidly discussed her distressing departure from Channel Nine in 2007, including the unfortunate incident where her termination was disclosed to the public just before the Logie Awards.
Instead of saying “The 54-year-old veteran journalist was not invited to the red carpet that year, and she woke up to find a media mob at her front door,” you could rephrase it as: “That year, the seasoned journalist who had been in the field for 54 years didn’t receive an invitation to the red carpet event. To her surprise, she found herself facing a group of reporters on her doorstep upon waking.” This version maintains the original meaning while using more natural and easy-to-read language.
She mentioned that it was long before the emergence of Instagram, TikTok, and other similar platforms. Back then, her departure from the Today Show was widely publicized in newspapers, as she shared this memory during the Jess Rowe Big Talk Show on Monday.
At that moment, I was taken aback since the release wasn’t scheduled for a few more days. Consequently, I wasn’t ready for it.
As a committed supporter, I found myself facing an additional layer of trouble when my spouse, the well-known Channel Nine personality Peter Overton, was put on the spot during the Logie Awards red carpet, having to address queries regarding my dismissal.
In another part of the podcast, Jess shared her efforts to avoid public attention the day following the awards ceremony.
At the time Jess and Peter had just welcomed their daughter Allegra.
She recounted, “That particular morning, I distinctly heard the sounds of cameras and footsteps echoing from outside our front porch.”
“Oh wow, you know, my heart skipped a beat!” I exclaimed, while on the inside I felt as if the ground beneath me had suddenly vanished. “I couldn’t help but flash this wide grin,” I continued, “but in reality, it was all I could do to keep myself from falling apart.”
Initially, I was making an effort to put Allegra into the car. However, while I was doing that, I found myself surrounded by cameras and inquisitive individuals who were eagerly questioning me.
“Despite feeling as if my world was shattering within, all I managed to express was a smile. Then, it dawned on me that I’d successfully put Allegra in the vehicle, followed by settling myself in the driver’s seat.”
As I rounded the corner, escaping the cameras, I suddenly found myself overcome with emotion, tears streaming down my face as I thought, “Oh dear, what lies ahead for me?” At that moment, everything was fresh and unfamiliar to me; I was a person deeply identified with my profession.
Jess also recalled how only a year earlier she had hosted the red carpet.
2006 saw Jessica stepping into the limelight as she switched from Channel 10 to the Nine Network, taking over Tracy Grimshaw’s role as co-host on the Today show.
However, controversy arose when it was alleged that Nine’s CEO, Eddie McGuire, inappropriately asked about when he could terminate or dismiss Jessica, with some interpretations indicating that he actually meant to suggest a romantic encounter with her at the time.
According to reports, he is said to have made the comments during a chat with his former deputy, Jeffrey Browne, and the head of news and current affairs at Nine, Mark Llewellyn.
McGuire allegedly suggested, “What’s our plan regarding Jessica? I think the right time for us to meet with her is next week.”
Later on, it was claimed that Llewellyn warned McGuire that the network could potentially lose Jessica’s spouse, television journalist Peter Overton from Nine News, if they decided to dismiss her.
As an ardent admirer, I recall a moment where McGuire casually mused, “Perhaps it’s a gamble we must take.” Then, Browne chipped in with a hint of concern, “If we continue to keep her on-air, we might just become the butt of jokes ourselves.”
McGuire later refuted the claim that he employed the word “bone” during their discussion, a statement that was detailed in Llewellyn’s sworn affidavit which became public knowledge following his departure to work at competing station Seven.
In 2007, Jessica stepped down from the Today show after her maternity leave, citing disagreements over salary as the cause of her resignation at that point.
After that, she became a presenter on Seven News in Sydney for Channel Seven, followed by participating in Dancing with the Stars.
Jessica moved to Weekend Sunrise in late 2010 and stayed there for three years.
2013 saw her join Network Ten as the co-host of their morning program Studio 10, sharing the stage with Ita Buttrose, Joe Hildebrand, Sarah Harris, and Denise Drysdale.
In March 2018, she announced she was resigning from the program to spend more time with her family.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share my admiration for the delightful couple, Jess and her long-time partner, Channel Nine news anchor Peter Overton. This dynamic duo has been inseparable since their nuptials in 2004 and have two beautiful daughters, Allegra, who is now 17 years old, and Giselle, a vibrant 15-year-old.
2023 found Jessica expressing no regrets about her tenure on the morning program aired by Nine during an appearance on Stellar’s podcast, Something to Talk About.
Reflecting on those moments, I can still vividly remember the knot in my stomach – it was a palpable, gut-wrenching experience. To put it bluntly, it was an utter low point. Yet, as strange as it may seem, I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything else.
Since I firmly embrace the idea that life offers limited chances for greatness, I felt it was crucial to seize any chance that presents itself. When extraordinary possibilities arise, one must take a risk and try their utmost. Therefore, I made up my mind to give it my all.
