The story of Jerry O’Connell and Giuliana Rancic’s breakup – specifically, how he abruptly ended things over the intercom – is getting attention again.
Their relationship began in 2003, but they split up in 2004. Since then, she’s openly claimed he cheated on her.
The old wounds reopened this week when O’Connell was confronted with a passage from Rancic’s memoir, in which she wrote that he ended their relationship by saying on his intercom: ‘Nope, sorry, homegirl…Things change, but you take care, OK?’
O’Connell jokingly admitted he wasn’t a great boyfriend, explaining that Rancic unexpectedly showed up at his house while he was with someone else – as he shared on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera.
After the incident gained widespread attention online, Rancic addressed it in a video posted to her Instagram Stories. She was shown relaxing on a boat and enjoying a drink while filming.
Criticizing O’Connell for not remembering their breakup clearly, she stated she could have simply offered a brief statement wishing him well. However, she chose to address the situation in detail on a new episode of her podcast.
The Daily Mail has contacted Rancic and O’Connell’s representatives for comment.
She leaned into the microphone, speaking as if sharing a secret with her fans. ‘You won’t believe this,’ she said, ‘but my ex is suddenly talking about our breakup – after twenty-two years! And honestly, his version of events doesn’t quite match up with what I remember.’
Rancic said her inbox was flooded with messages while she was on vacation. She considered simply wishing him well with a short statement, but instead, she’s planning to discuss the matter in detail on a 40-minute podcast next week.
“And Jerry, we definitely want you to come!” Rancic added. She co-hosts her podcast with her husband, Bill, whom she’s been married to for almost twenty years.

In her 2015 memoir, Rancic publicly claimed that O’Connell had affairs – first with Geri Halliwell, and later with his current wife, Rebecca Romijn. While she said she initially forgave him for the affair with Halliwell, their relationship eventually ended after he became involved with Romijn.
While he didn’t directly admit to cheating on Ripa, he admitted he wasn’t a good partner and apologized to Rancic.
Kelly Ripa then discussed the issue with Joan Rivers’ intercom and read a section from Giuliana Rancic’s book about it. This made Andy Cohen feel uncomfortable, like he was being put on the spot and judged.
He said he ended their relationship over the intercom because she showed up at his apartment and used it to contact him while he had a guest with him – someone he didn’t specify.
He said Rancic had expressed a desire to be let in, but he’d already paid a significant amount in homeowner’s fees for security features like a buzzer, gate, and cameras designed to keep unwanted guests out.
I told him I wasn’t expecting a visit and that he couldn’t just show up without letting me know beforehand. It wasn’t a close enough relationship where he’d have a key, so this was inappropriate,” O’Connell explained.
He explained he was upset by uninvited guests at his condo, saying he preferred to know beforehand when someone would be visiting and wanted to avoid any arguments.
When Ripa asked O’Connell to repeat exactly what Rancic claimed he’d said over the intercom, he avoided a direct answer, stating he didn’t remember the specific words and therefore couldn’t confirm or deny saying it.
