Jeri Ryan cancelled her screen test for Star Trek: Voyager after watching an episode

As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the franchise, I must say that Jeri Ryan’s journey as Seven of Nine is nothing short of phenomenal. From her humble beginnings on Voyager to her impressive tenure in Picard and ultimately becoming the captain of the new Enterprise, it’s been a thrilling ride for fans like me.

Initially played by Jeri Ryan, the character Seven of Nine from Star Trek: Voyager gained immense popularity among fans. When Voyager concluded, it seemed we wouldn’t encounter Seven of Nine anymore, but with Star Trek: Picard, that changed. The first season of this new series brought back the beloved character. Not only was Ryan present throughout all three seasons of Picard, but in the final episode, Seven of Nine was appointed as captain of a new Enterprise. Now, fans eagerly anticipate whether her storyline will continue in the upcoming spin-off series, Star Trek: Legacy.

To say this character has been successful is an understatement, but Ryan had trepidation about taking on the role. After reading for the producers, she was invited back for a screen test. According to a quote included in The Fifty-Year Mission The Next 25 Years from The Next Generation to J.J. Abrams by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross, Ryan thought she should probably watch an episode of Voyager before she committed to a seven-year contract. So she and her mother watched together, and Ryan described it as “the worst hour of TV I’d ever seen.” She’d even watched the episode through her fingers as she had both hands over her eyes.

Following the conclusion of the episode, Ryan informed her mother she wouldn’t be participating in screen tests, prompting a call to cancel to her agent. She assumed that was the end of the matter. However, the following morning, Rick Berman reached out and invited her for a discussion about her concerns. This talk took place with Jeri Taylor and Brannon Braga present. Ryan revealed which episode she had watched, and they all agreed it wasn’t fair to judge the series based on that specific, unnamed episode. Though it’s not hard to guess which one Ryan had seen! After being assured about their plans for her character, Ryan decided to play Seven of Nine, marking a significant milestone in Star Trek lore.
