Jeremy Renner Rejects Hawkeye Season 2 Offer After Disney Proposes Half Pay

Jeremy Renner, known for playing Hawkeye (Clint Barton) in seven Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, last appeared as the character in a 2021 Disney+ miniseries. Remarkably, after surviving a near-fatal snowplow accident in early 2023, Renner demonstrated an extraordinary resilience, returning to work on other projects. Despite this comeback, he has yet to reappear in the Marvel Universe. Interestingly, Renner was given the opportunity to return as Clint Barton for another season of “Hawkeye”, but the terms of his offer were disappointing at best.

In an interview with High Performance, Renner disclosed that he was given only half as much as his initial pay for Season 1 of Hawkeye for Season 2. Although he didn’t share the specific figure, it’s clear that the compensation wasn’t going to justify the effort required to work on a project of such scale. Renner expressed:

During an interview with High Performance, Renner shared that he was given only half his initial salary for Season 1 of Hawkeye for Season 2. He didn’t give the exact amount, but it’s clear that the payment wasn’t going to be worth the time and effort needed for such a large-scale project. Renner stated:

They proposed that I work on Season 2, but they only offered me half the compensation. In essence, I would be putting in double the effort for half the pay, and investing around eight months of my time for this reduced rate.

Jeremy Renner Suffered A Near-Fatal Accident in 2023

On New Year’s Day, 2023, an accident involving Renner occurred when he bravely shielded his nephew from being run over by a snowplow, only to be struck himself. As a result, he sustained severe chest trauma and a total of 38 broken bones. After undergoing surgery, he was placed in the intensive care unit in critical condition. Yet, his recovery has been remarkable – on January 17, 2023, Renner was discharged from the hospital and began his recuperation at home. Within just three months, he was ambulating with a cane, and every advancement in his healing journey served as a powerful demonstration of the actor’s unyielding determination and robust constitution.

When discussing his lower salary for Season 2 of Hawkeye, Jeremy Renner implied that he suspected the pay cut might be due to the accident that happened in 2023. He stated, “I’m thinking, ‘Excuse me? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got hit by a car? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I earned during the first season?'” Renner further explained that it appeared Marvel was not involved in the decision and instead blamed the accountants employed by Disney.

To clarify, this isn’t like Marvel; it’s merely Disney, or at least not the genuine Disney you might think of. It’s more about cost-cutting and accounting. I suggested they should just play with kites instead. We simply didn’t see eye to eye on it. Despite my fondness for the character, I would have loved to reprise the role, but I felt compelled to stand up for myself. I didn’t ask for any additional compensation; I only wanted the same pay as I received in the first season. Unfortunately, that didn’t transpire, but I can let it go because my body is likely grateful I’m not taking on the role right now. But who knows what the future holds?

In six action-packed episodes, the series Hawkeye centered around Clint Barton (Renner), who teamed up with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to mentor her and fight adversaries from his personal history. The show also featured performances by Tony Dalton, Fra Fee, Brian d’Arcy James, Aleks Paunovic, Piotr Adamczyk, Linda Cardellini, Simon Callow, Vera Farmiga, Alaqua Cox, Zahn McClarnon, Florence Pugh and Vincent D’Onofrio.
