Jeremy Renner And Edie Falco Told Me How Their Characters’ First Meeting In Mayor Of Kingstown Season 4 ‘Sets The Tone For The Entire Season’

Be warned: spoilers for the first episode of Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 are coming up! If you haven’t seen it yet, you can watch it on Paramount+. New episodes air on Sundays.

Though Jeremy Renner’s character, Mike, holds the title of Mayor of Kingstown, Edie Falco’s new character, Warden Nina Hobbs, arrives in Season 4 as a powerful force. Unlike someone who would support Mike, Nina is positioned as a significant opponent. I spoke with both Renner and Falco about how their characters’ initial, strained encounter will shape the rest of the season’s storyline.

The fourth season begins with Mike visiting Nina at her new workplace just as his brother, Kyle, is heading to prison. It quickly becomes apparent that Mike and Nina have very different perspectives.

Renner is aggressively trying to arrange things so his brother will have an easier time in prison, giving out instructions to everyone. He promises Nina a favor in return if she helps him, but she doesn’t trust him and immediately informs the mayor about what’s happening.

This is my castle now, and only I can lower the drawbridge.

That comment clearly affected Mike, even though he tried not to show it. He’s accustomed to being in charge, so I asked Renner how that moment made his character adapt. He explained to me:

Looking back, the start of their relationship was just magical. It really felt like it defined everything that happened afterward, didn’t it? It set the stage for the whole season, honestly.

I recently spoke with the actor who plays Mike in Mayor of Kingstown, and he explained what’s driving his character now. After everything that happened at the end of Season 3, Mike is completely focused on protecting his brother, Kyle. Kyle shot Robert and is heading to prison, and there’s not much Mike can do to change that. But he can try to keep him safe. The problem is, Nina is making things really difficult, and honestly, it’s really frustrating to watch my character deal with her. He told me himself!

I was particularly impressed with the strength and quality of the characters. It was easy to build my performance, especially off of Edie, who is a fantastic actor. Honestly, the material really resonated with me, and even frustrated me at times, because I connected with it so deeply. I especially felt protective of my character’s relationship with her brother, and the whole experience was quite intense.

Watching this scene is definitely powerful. Interestingly, the same word also captures how Nina feels about meeting with Mike. When I spoke with Falco, the latest big name to join a Taylor Sheridan project, about her character’s reaction, she emphasized that Nina was being genuine. As the Nurse Jackie actress explained:

She seemed to expect things to go as planned, likely because that’s how it had been for her in the past. Initially, she probably realized this situation would be more difficult than she thought. However, she still believed she could fix things, just like she always had, even within the prison environment.

You can watch Taylor Sheridan’s series, such as Mayor of Kingstown, on Paramount+. Subscriptions begin at $7.99 monthly or $59.99 annually. For $12.99 a month, you can upgrade to the Premium plan for ad-free viewing and access to Showtime. See the deal here.

She’s serious about what she’s doing and won’t tolerate Mike interfering. But it’s equally clear that Mike is determined to proceed regardless.

I had a feeling this season was going to be crazy from the start, especially with Kyle going to prison. We were told Mike’s past actions would come back to haunt him somehow, and now it seems like his brother’s situation and the new warden might be what triggers everything. It feels like all this is connected to what’s coming for Mike.

As a big fan of Mayor of Kingstown, I’m really excited to see how the dynamic between these characters shapes the new season. You can catch the latest episodes with me every Sunday on Paramount+!
