Jennifer Metcalfe’s new BBC drama set in Birmingham reveals first-look trailer ahead of April release

The Birmingham-based coming-of-age drama titled “Just Act Natural” has unveiled its initial trailer, which will air on BBC towards the end of this month.

In the video, we find actors Chenée Taylor, Kaydrah Walker-Wilkie, and Akins Subair portraying siblings Tiana, Tanika, and Tionne. As their mother disappears, these youngsters are left to survive on their own. Overwhelmed by fear of being separated, they opt to conceal this hardship from others.

As Tiana manages the day-to-day affairs of their lives, Tanika strives to persuade her teacher to become their guardian. At the same time, Tionne copes with his sorrow in a different way. Meanwhile, the grown-ups consistently request talks with their mother, causing the children to fabricate explanations for her continuous absence.

In the midst of their newly disordered life, events take an unexpected twist when their mother’s drug supplier, commonly known as Dr. Feelgood, decides to move into their home.

In a humorous moment, the perplexed vendor queries about the purpose of the poultry found within the abode of those siblings.

From what I gathered from the trailer, it appears that I might end up forming a special bond with this animal, acting as my companion and emotional ally, much like a supportive family member.

Just Act Normal, often praised for its candid depiction of Black teenage life within the working class, features Romola Garai in the role of caring teacher Ms Jenkins, Sam Buchanan portraying the compassionate Dr Feelgood, and Ivanno Jeremiah as the characters’ father Leo.

In the TV show “Hollyoaks”, actresses Jamelia and Jennifer Metcalfe take on roles that substitute for the mother of the siblings. Their characters are portrayed as False Jackie and Leo’s love interest, Candy, in the storyline.

Under the guidance of director Nathaniel Martello-White, this captivating series is penned by author Janice Okoh and is poised to be a vibrant tribute to Black jubilation, council housing complexes, and neighborhood convenience stores. It’s a portrayal of working-class existence and aspirations in its truest form.

“It is human and tender,” the synopsis reads, “with a thumping great heart.”

Just Act Normal is coming to BBC iPlayer and BBC Three from April 16.
