Jennifer Love Hewitt says ‘the idea of returning to Julie James is really exciting’

As a die-hard fan of the original “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” I can hardly contain my excitement over the upcoming legacy sequel! The suspense is killing me, especially with regards to Jennifer Love Hewitt‘s return as Julie James. Her recent interview with ComingSoon.net has left me hopeful that she will reprise her role, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for an official confirmation soon!

The filming for the legacy sequel of Sony’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” began in late November, but there’s been no formal announcement yet about whether Jennifer Love Hewitt will be back to play her character, Julie James, once more.

In a recent chat with ComingSoon.net, Hewitt provided an encouraging update, mentioning that although she hasn’t formally agreed to it yet, they are nearly set on reaching a deal. She shared that arranging her schedule around her current show, the FOX series 9-1-1, has been challenging.

Yet, Hewitt expresses his sentiment about reprising the role of Julie as a privilege. He’s especially intrigued to discover what Julie’s been experiencing since then and how that fateful, life-altering night continues to impact her.

“I think on the personal level of being like, ‘what are people gonna think of the 45-year-old version of Julie James?’ I think ’cause I’m a woman and human, that part of it makes me a little nervous,” Hewitt adds.

Hewitt doesn’t want a mere cameo

Towards the end of November, Hewitt expressed her intentions to Parade. If she decides to reprise her role for the sequel, she desires it to carry substance rather than a fleeting appearance. In her own words, “I don’t want my presence to be limited to just a few seconds.” Whatever the creators plan, the ’90s icon yearns for an opportunity to “dedicate enough time to make a real impact” and for her role to have significance.

In a conversation with Parade, she hinted at what she later confirmed to ComingSoon.net: her team is almost finalizing the deal and working on the finer points. This indicates that her comeback might be imminent, and we eagerly await an official announcement on this exciting news.

Freddie Prinze Jr. has reportedly wrapped filming on the sequel

The movie titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is presently being filmed in Australia. Previous reports have indicated that Freddie Prinze Jr., who used to act alongside Hewitt, will reprise his role as Julie’s boyfriend (and future spouse), Ray Bronson.

Recently, Prince Jr. posted a series of Instagram stories suggesting that he has completed filming. In one post, he bid farewell to Australia with the words, “Goodbye Australia! Thank you for the wonderful time!” In another, he expressed, “The work is over. Back to painting miniatures.

If Hewitt hasn’t officially joined yet, while it appears that the other character has already been wrapped up, does this imply that Ray and Julie won’t act together? It seems odd to introduce beloved characters again, particularly those in a relationship, without having them appear together at least once. Maybe they’ll shoot additional scenes during pick-ups in the U.S. instead.

The last time Ray and Julie appeared on screen was in the 1998 film sequel titled “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”. At that point, they had moved into a new home and were thriving in their married life. However, one fateful night, Julie spotted Ben lurking under their bed. In the concluding scene, the killer was shown pulling Julie away, hidden beneath the bed.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about the upcoming reboot of our favorite series! While Prinze Jr. and Hewitt are on board, it seems none of the other original cast members are returning (given that, well, let’s just say the other leads have moved on). But fear not, as the new flick promises an electrifying ensemble of rising talents like Madelyn Cline, Jonah Hauer-King, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, and Tyriq Withers. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who brought us ‘Do Revenge,’ steps up to direct and co-write the script. Can’t wait to see what they’ve cooked up!

The untitled sequel film will be released on July 18, 2025.
