Jennifer Lopez used social media on Sunday to show her support for Bad Bunny before he performs at the Super Bowl.
The 56-year-old singer posted a clip from her 2020 Super Bowl halftime performance, featuring a special appearance by her fellow Puerto Rican artist, who is 31 years old.
She tagged Bad Bunny, real name Benito Ocasio, as well as Shakira and J Balvin.
Lopez added the hashtag, ‘#LatinoGangGang.’
Last October, she strongly supported Bad Bunny after people criticized his selection as the halftime show performer.
Lopez expressed excitement that people unfamiliar with him will be able to learn more about him, encouraging viewers to give him a chance, as he stated on CBS Mornings.
She added that music and art go beyond the limits of language, and he’s achieved this better than anyone in recent history.
Honestly, it drives me crazy when people complain about Bad Bunny singing in Spanish! Like, duh, he’s Puerto Rican! It’s amazing to me that some folks – even the President, can you believe it? – actually complain that most of his songs aren’t in English. It’s part of what makes him so special and authentic, and it’s a huge reason why I’m such a massive fan. It’s his art, and he should express himself however he wants!
When questioned about complaints that people didn’t recognize the performer, Lopez responded that the Super Bowl is meant to help audiences discover new artists.
The Super Bowl has a way of exposing you to a wider audience. I think a lot of people who watched my 2020 halftime show with Shakira might not have known me or been fans beforehand,” she explained.
She explained that this is a chance to express yourself, share your values, and showcase your talent. It’s a huge opportunity for artists – likely the biggest platform they could ask for.
The performer, originally from the Bronx, has been a strong and public supporter of Ocasio, especially as critics from conservative groups have become more vocal.
Usher’s performance at the Super Bowl, organized in partnership with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, has been criticized by Donald Trump and his supporters. They claim the NFL made a ‘crazy’ decision by choosing an artist who primarily sings in languages other than English.
Ocasio responded to the backlash by making a joke while hosting Saturday Night Live in October. He quipped, ‘Some of you may be surprised to learn I’m performing at the Super Bowl halftime show, but I’m thrilled – and I think even Fox News is happy about it!’
Bad Bunny was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, and grew up in the Almirante Sur neighborhood of Vega Baja.
His mother, Lysaurie Ocasio, is a retired teacher, and his father, Tito Martínez, drove trucks.
Jennifer Lopez was born in New York City, but her parents, Guadalupe and David Lopez, are originally from Puerto Rico.
Last Sunday, the artist behind ‘Yo Perreo Sola’ achieved a historic first: winning Album of the Year for a project entirely in Spanish.
When Harry Styles announced his name, the singer-songwriter was overcome with emotion. He paused, remaining seated with his hand over his face.
You know, watching that acceptance speech really moved me. He beautifully dedicated his award to everyone who’s ever had the courage to leave everything behind – their homes, their countries – to chase their dreams. It was such a powerful and relatable sentiment, and I think it resonated with so many people because it speaks to the universal desire for a better life and the bravery it takes to pursue it.
While accepting the award for Best Música Urbana Album earlier that night, he jokingly acknowledged ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) before thanking God, referencing the government agency’s focus on immigration reform.
