Jennifer Lee steps down as Disney Animation chief. 'Zootopia' co-director takes over

As a cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia as I read about the changes at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Jennifer Lee has been a driving force behind some of the most beloved animated films of our time, from “Frozen” to its sequels, and her decision to focus on the Frozen franchise is a testament to her unwavering dedication to storytelling.

According to a statement made on Thursday, Jennifer Lee, the head of creative operations at Walt Disney Animation Studios, has chosen to leave her executive position in order to concentrate fully on managing the “Frozen” series.

As a cinephile, I’m excited to announce that the talented Jared Bush, who masterfully directed “Zootopia” and “Encanto,” will be stepping into the director’s chair in my place. This transition takes effect right away!

For over a decade, Bush has been employed at Disney Animation Studios. Currently, he is responsible for both writing and directing the upcoming movie “Zootopia 2,” set to release next year. Additionally, he penned the screenplay for the 2016 film “Moana” and served as executive producer on the 2021 animation “Raya and the Last Dragon.

In a statement, Bush expressed enthusiasm for joining forces with Disney Animation’s talented storytellers, artists, and staff. He noted that Disney Animation has been the home to some of the most remarkable tales and characters from the last hundred years, and he looks forward to collaborating with everyone as they collectively mold the studio’s future.

Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman described Bush as a “significant creative influence at Disney Animation over the past ten years,” and expressed his excitement in a statement about Bush assuming leadership of this well-known animation studio.

In her statement, Lee expressed her appreciation towards Bergman and Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, for standing by her as she resumed her career in filmmaking on a full-time basis.

As a devoted admirer, I’ve long held the conviction that Jared possesses an extraordinary gift in animation. The anticipation bubbling within me is palpable as I envision his unwavering passion and commitment unfolding in his new role as Chief Creative Officer. Working alongside this creative collective of artists, animators, and narrators feels like a rare opportunity, and I eagerly await the magnificent collaborations our union will spawn.

For a period of six years, Lee held the position of chief at the renowned animation studio, managing all creative aspects such as films, shows, and additional initiatives.

Previously, she served as both director and scriptwriter for the 2013 film “Frozen” and its sequel, “Frozen 2” in 2019. Now, her focus will shift towards writing and directing the upcoming franchise installment, “Frozen 3,” scheduled for release in 2027, as well as collaborating with colleague Marc Smith on “Frozen 4.” Lee has been part of Disney Animation since 2011.
