Jennifer Lawrence’s sci-fi flop is on TV tonight

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has seen his fair share of blockbusters, I must admit that my anticipation for a film is often influenced by its cast, plot, and reviews. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt have delivered some fantastic performances in their respective careers, so when I heard about “Passengers” back in 2016, I was intrigued. However, the negative reception it received left me hesitant to give it a try.

Throughout her illustrious career, Jennifer Lawrence has enjoyed numerous successes such as winning an Oscar for ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, and the blockbuster ‘Hunger Games’ series. Yet, she’s also experienced a few high-profile flops.

Hey there! If you’re up for some throwback entertainment, one of my favorite shows is airing tonight. Maybe you want to revisit it after missing out in 2016, or perhaps you’re curious as to why it didn’t quite hit the mark back then. Either way, I hope you enjoy it!

Starring Lawrence and Chris Pratt, Passengers is airing on Channel 4 at 12.35am tonight.

No need to fret about your Saturday evening plans clashing with the movie; it’ll be streamable on Channel 4’s online service later. You can catch it too on Amazon Prime Video, or rent/purchase it on Sky, iTunes, and Microsoft Store.

Jennifer Lawrence's sci-fi flop is on TV tonight

The film chronicles the journey of two space travelers, Jim (Pratt) and Aurora (Lawrence), who are unexpectedly woken up 90 years ahead of schedule because of a technical glitch on their spaceship.

Due to the inability of resuming deep sleep during travel, it became inevitable that Jim and Aurora would face the reality that their lives might cease before they could reach their destination. As a mutual attraction blossomed between them, they chose to indulge in all the luxuries the spaceship provided, making the most of their time together and seeking joy wherever possible.

Yet, it quickly becomes apparent that the vessel is in critical condition, and it falls upon them alone to rescue the 5,000 slumbering travelers aboard.

In 2016, the sci-fi film Passengers, helmed by Morten Tyldum (nominated for an Oscar for The Imitation Game) and penned by Jon Spaihts (co-writer of Dune and its upcoming sequel), drew a lot of unfavorable reviews.

The movie now has a 30% rating (from 289 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.

During a chat with The New York Times, Jennifer Lawrence openly discussed the unfavorable reviews of the film and shared that Adele, a well-known musician, had advised her against taking on the project initially.

The actor playfully remarked, “‘Space films are the new vampire flicks,’ she said. In hindsight, I wish I’d paid more attention.”

In another conversation, Lawrence expressed that she comprehended the criticism and felt “let down by herself for not catching it earlier.”

“I found the script captivating – it told a deeply emotional and intricate tale of love. Far from being a disappointment, it certainly wasn’t a flop. I’m not ashamed of it in any way. I merely wish I had delved deeper into its aspects before diving in.”

Passengers is airing on Channel 4 at 12.35am tonight (Sunday, September 1).
