I was so excited to hear about Dakota Fanning joining the cast of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping! I read that Variety asked her on the Golden Globes red carpet if she’d actually stayed on set longer after finding out Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson were going to make surprise appearances as Katniss and Peeta. It’s amazing to think she might have extended her filming schedule just for the chance to work with them!

The actor from The Predator: Badlands was hesitant and said, “I can’t say whether that’s true. I didn’t see them while filming, and that’s accurate.”

Rumors began circulating about actors Hutcherson and Lawrence potentially joining the film after The Insneider reported them. These rumors were then supported by reports in leading industry publications such as Deadline.

Although Lawrence hasn’t commented on being involved in Sunrise on the Reaping, Hutcherson has spoken about the rumors surrounding his potential role. Before news outlets officially confirmed he was cast, the Five Nights at Freddy’s actor told Brit + Co, “Yeah, that would be cool, but I don’t know anything about it right now.”

Details about how Katniss and Peeta will appear in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping are currently being kept secret. However, fans who have read the book the movie is based on know that the two characters appear briefly in the story’s ending, listening to Haymitch Abernathy – who is the central character in both the book and film – tell the story of his life.

The first trailer for Sunrise on the Reaping came out on November 20, 2025, just before the movie finished filming. It quickly became very popular, reportedly getting 109 million views in a single day.

The next Hunger Games movie, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, will be released in theaters on November 20, 2026. Francis Lawrence returned to direct, working from a script written by Billy Ray.

The film features a talented cast including Elle Fanning, Joseph Zada, McKenna Grace, Maya Hawke, and Ralph Fiennes.
