The lawsuit asked ‘the state of Texas to clarify the scope of the ‘medical emergency’ exceptions’ under its strict abortion bans, which went into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court’s shock overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022.
In May 2024, the Texas Supreme Court decided that the wording was clear enough and declined to offer further explanation regarding the exceptions allowed for the state’s abortion restrictions.
According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, a court has dismissed the cases filed by twenty women who had been prevented from having an abortion due to severe pregnancy complications.
