Jennifer Lawrence Considered Retirement During Two-Year Hiatus

Jennifer Lawrence is returning to the big screen this year in the psychological thriller Die My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay. The film marks a return to the challenging and nuanced roles that made her a star, following acclaimed performances in movies like Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and Winter’s Bone.

Though still young at 35, Jennifer Lawrence recently thought about leaving acting. After finishing the Hunger Games films and receiving her fourth Oscar nomination for Joy, she starred in a few movies that weren’t successful. This led her to take a two-year break from work, as she shared on The Graham Norton Show.

Following the 2019 film Dark Phoenix, Jennifer Lawrence starred in Don’t Look Up in 2021. She explained to Jesse Norton that she needed a break after spending her twenties focused on big-budget franchises and awards-season movies, wondering what other opportunities were available. She said, “I took a little time… I was working all of my twenties, and then I was like… what’s out here? What’s going on?”

Lawrence explained she was fine with the idea that taking a break might mean she wouldn’t return to acting in Hollywood. She admitted it’s a complicated place, saying she thought she could have handled it, but also would have likely been frustrated and unsure how she’d feel.

Interestingly, Jennifer Lawrence’s last film before Die My Love was No Hard Feelings, which came out in 2023. That means it’s been about two years since we’ve seen her in a movie. Taking a break from acting is always a gamble, but Lawrence is such a well-known actress that filmmakers will likely still want to work with her even after this time off.

Lawrence admitted she would have been very disappointed to stop acting, acknowledging that either path – continuing or stopping – had its advantages. However, she now appears fully dedicated to her career again, with several new projects lined up after ‘Die My Love.’ These include a film with Amy Schumer and a collaboration with filmmakers Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley on their movie, ‘The Wives’.

Jennifer Lawrence will be starring in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film, What Happens at Night, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie is a suspenseful ghost story about a couple who journey to a secluded, snow-covered town in Europe to adopt a child. They stay at a strange hotel filled with unusual people.

After years of starring in major franchises like The Hunger Games and X-Men, and earning several Oscar nominations before turning 30, Jennifer Lawrence naturally thought about taking a break from acting. Despite considering a life outside of the spotlight, her love for acting eventually brought her back to the profession.
