Many Hollywood stars create a public image, and Jennifer Lawrence was no exception early in her career. She quickly became known as a down-to-earth and honest person. However, this image eventually became exaggerated and problematic. Lawrence has recently reflected on this past persona, admitting she now finds it “embarrassing” and that Ariana Grande’s impression of it on Saturday Night Live was spot-on.
I always loved how refreshingly down-to-earth Jennifer Lawrence seemed when she first became famous. I recently read a fascinating article about her, and it described how she used to be so carefree and relaxed in public – just genuinely herself. The article mentioned she was looking back at some older interviews while promoting her new movie, Die My Love, and you could feel her reaction when she talked about it. It was a really powerful moment.
It was a really intense and awkward time. Looking back, I realize that while it felt like who I truly was, it was also a way I protected myself.
Becoming famous is a strange experience, and everyone deals with it differently. Jennifer Lawrence, star of Silver Linings Playbook, seemed to try and protect herself by simply being herself. However, as The New Yorker pointed out, this approach ultimately led to accusations that she wasn’t being genuine, even though that wasn’t what she intended.
It was a way of defending myself, almost like saying, ‘That’s not me! I was a mess – I struggled with basic things, I was on my own, and I felt like I was constantly running from something.’
Jennifer Lawrence has talked about feeling overwhelmed during that period, particularly after the first Hunger Games film came out. She explained she was frustrated with how much she was working and doing publicity. Now, she understands the criticism she faced and even appreciates Ariana Grande’s impression of her from a few years ago.
When I watch those interviews, the person comes across as irritating, and I understand why people might find them frustrating to see constantly. Ariana Grande’s impersonation of me on ‘Saturday Night Live’ was really accurate.
Ariana Grande impersonated Jennifer Lawrence in a funny sketch for Celebrity Family Feud back in 2016. Grande is already known for doing great impressions, but her portrayal of a young Jennifer Lawrence is remarkably accurate – almost eerily so! You can watch the sketch here:
Things are different now for Jennifer Lawrence. Being married with two children has changed her experience with fame. She’s noticed people are less focused on her personal life, which allows her to live more freely. Overall, she’s become a more mature and self-assured person and actress.
Despite any changes, Jennifer Lawrence is still known for being funny and open about what she thinks. That straightforward and sometimes unpredictable quality led her to ask Robert Pattinson about Donald Trump’s tweets regarding his 2012 split with Kristen Stewart. Her unique personality also seems to be the reason she playfully fed Pattinson food from her trash can. While she might not be the same person Ariana Grande once parodied, elements of her old self still shine through, and that’s perfectly okay.
