According to reports from sources like People, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are likely to return as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping.
Not much is known about how Katniss and Peeta will be portrayed in the new film, but readers of Suzanne Collins’ novel, Sunrise on the Reaping, will recall the characters appear in a brief scene set in the future at the end of the book.
The characters share a short but important scene with Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the first four Hunger Games films.
Collins’ newest book tells the story of a young Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Joseph Zada, as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games. This takes place 24 years before the events of the first Hunger Games film featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, and the book was released on March 18th of this year.
Zada, who was confirmed for the part in April, shared with Deadline that she’s familiar with the project – she’s read the script and the source material book twice, but is keeping details under wraps.
I absolutely love everything about the project, the actors, and the entire team. I’m incredibly nervous right now, too,” the We Were Liars star said.

The first Hunger Games movie, released in 2012, was a huge success, earning over $694 million around the world and breaking box office records.
The film featured a strong cast, with Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson playing the lead roles. Liam Hemsworth appeared as their ally Gale Hawthorne, Woody Harrelson as their mentor Haymitch, Lenny Kravitz as the stylist Cinna, Stanley Tucci as the charismatic host Caesar Flickerman, and the late Donald Sutherland as the imposing President Snow.
Hutcherson got fans talking when he mentioned he might be back for another Hunger Games movie.
He told Variety in November that he’d jump at the chance to work with Francis, Jen, Liam, and Woody again. He said he wouldn’t need any persuading – he’d be on set immediately.
Hutcherson didn’t confirm whether he’d be in Sunrise on the Reaping, but said it would be ‘a dream come true.’ He then playfully questioned if dreams actually come true, adding, ‘Sometimes. Sometimes not. Sometimes, yeah.’
As a huge Hunger Games fan, I was so excited for the first prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and it definitely delivered! It was a big success when it came out in 2023, bringing in about $349 million at the box office worldwide, which is great considering it cost around $100 million to make.
The upcoming film, Sunrise on the Reaping, is scheduled to be released on November 20, 2026, and stars Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Elle Fanning, Kieran Culkin, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Jesse Plemons, Lili Taylor, Iris Apatow, Ralph Fiennes (as President Snow), and Glenn Close (as Drusilla Sickle).
The announcement that Lawrence will work with Hutcherson again follows her recent comments about her experiences collaborating with women directors.

During a discussion with Vulture after a screening of her new film, Die My Love, the actress shared her thoughts on working with female directors. She noted that, compared to male filmmakers, women tend to avoid ‘over-directing’ – giving too many unnecessary instructions.
Lawrence observed that many female directors share a characteristic: they avoid being overly directive on set.
I’ve occasionally worked with male directors who seem determined to constantly assert their control on set.
It doesn’t actually accomplish much, it’s just irritating. When I hear the term ‘auteur,’ I immediately think of someone who’s controlling and… well, a bit obsessive!
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve noticed a common trend in filmmaking, but Lynne Ramsay really bucked that trend. She did things completely differently – almost the opposite, in fact.
She created a truly immersive experience, ensuring everyone felt connected through the music, discussions, and overall environment she crafted.
She’d often slowly walk back, and surprisingly, something good would sometimes come from the awkwardness of not being seen.
‘And then she would come out and be like, “That’s great, great, yeah, do it again.”‘
