Jennifer Coolidge has explained why her role on The White Lotus was “far better than American Pie“.
On the series, the actor portrayed the self-centered heiress Tanya McQuoid and immediately captured viewers’ hearts. Although her character met an untimely end in season two, the part garnered numerous awards for Coolidge and reportedly boosted her personal romantic prospects as well.
Despite portraying an eccentric character in the show ‘White Lotus’, it seems that sweet-natured men still approach me, as Coolidge shared with The Sunday Times.
“That surpasses ‘American Pie’ as it dealt with the heartbreaking incident of Tanya falling from a boat, which resonates more with viewers because they can relate to your personal experiences. This series has made an impression on these men, giving them the feeling that you have walked a similar path. It significantly enhanced my perspective.
After playing Jeanine Stifler in the 1999 comedy film “American Pie,” Coolidge found her career trajectory declining. She often felt that she was being passed over for roles, with casting agents primarily associating her with the character of “Stifler’s Mom.
The actor explained that she often took on unusual roles because she lacked any direction initially. She confessed, “I was clueless about navigating the industry.” Later, she admitted, “I frequently portrayed tense, affluent women, which led others to think, ‘That’s just her niche.’
2021’s “White Lotus” series brought Coolidge back into the spotlight, as her performance of Tanya captivated both fans and critics alike. This character was thought up by the show’s creator, Mike White (who is also a longtime friend of Coolidge), after they spent time together in an African safari tent during their vacation.
On the trip, Coolidge seemed to act unusually, which ultimately inspired Tanya’s character. Reflecting upon it later, she mused, “Is it likely that another director would have selected me for the role of Tanya? I doubt it.
In another part of the conversation, Coolidge spoke about being excluded from the series, expressing: “One must take it in stride, but I said something like, ‘Are you serious? Seriously?’ I grumbled a bit, then moved on.
In the United Kingdom, “The White Lotus” is broadcasted on Sky Atlantic and can also be streamed on Sky Go and NOW. Each new episode of season 3 becomes available every Monday. Meanwhile, in the United States, the show is aired on HBO and can be streamed on Max.
