Jennie Garth says deaths of Beverly Hills, 90210 costars Luke Perry and Shannen Doherty have made her ‘very fearful’ of her mortality: ‘Any of us could go at any moment’
I cannot express enough how shocking and disheartening it was to learn about Shannen Doherty’s passing at such a young age. I had the immense pleasure of working with her on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and she left an indelible mark on me and countless others.
Jennie Garth, an actress from “Beverly Hills, 90210,” has shared that the passing away of her castmates Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry before what seemed like an appropriate time, has caused her to reflect deeply on her own life and eventual end.
On Monday, Garth, aged 52, and Tori Spelling, also 51, talked about the topic on their podcast 90210MG. This conversation took place roughly a week after Doherty’s passing at the age of 53 due to breast cancer on July 13. Additionally, five years have passed since Perry died at the same age of 52 following a massive stroke in March 2019.
An actress born in Urbana, Illinois, who starred in 292 episodes of the successful Fox series from 1990 to 2000 as Kelly Taylor, expressed that the passing of her long-term co-stars left her with a sense of apprehension regarding mortality.
“With Luke passing away and Shanzen more recently, Garth expressed on the podcast how he’s been struck by the realization that life can be unpredictable. He remarked, ‘It’s a sobering thought that any one of us could be next.'”
In an interview, actress Shannen Doherty, formerly known as Spelling on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” shared that she has always been timid, but Doherty’s passing brought upon her deep sadness.
Spelling expressed sadness instead of fear as she watched her pass by. Having faced health challenges herself in the past, she had a unique perspective during the moment.
“I was disappointed for her about the second chapter she experienced, but eagerly anticipated it for her and deeply hoped she would get through it.”
After Perry’s passing in 2019, Garth and Spelling came together with former co-stars Doherty, Priestley, Green, Carteris, and Ziering for the revival series “BH90210.” In this show, they portrayed fictitious versions of themselves.
Garth expressed that Perry’s passing felt like losing a significant part of her own structure, and he finds it hard to come to terms with it.
“Garth explained, ‘Only those who were present can truly comprehend what we went through. It’s a difficult concept to accept that others might fully understand our connection.’ “
Despite Doherty’s frequently discussed health issues, Garth was shocked to discover that his castmate had passed away, given her known ability to bounce back.
I can’t believe it, despite knowing she was battling illness and putting up such a fierce fight, the news of her passing left me in shock. I never imagined Doherty would lose her battle against cancer.
In 2015, Doherty received a diagnosis of breast cancer that later went into remission. Unfortunately, the cancer came back in 2017, advancing to stage four and eventually reaching her brain last year.

Garth shared, “I gained valuable insights from the experience, particularly on asserting myself and advocating for my beliefs. Her courage in expressing herself left a profound impact on me, inspiring me to become a more vocal person.”
Garth and Spelling expressed their intentions to pay tribute to Doherty and Perry at fan gatherings for the beloved retro show.
In the wake of that trying experience, I believe I muster up my strength for their sake, as I’ve witnessed firsthand how it brought us solace when we endured the loss of Luke.
Garth expressed that the bond of love, appreciation, and support between us was as thin as a thread, but its existence was undeniable. I believe this connection will persist indefinitely.
Based on my personal experiences and observations, it seems that romantic feelings can evolve and change over time. From what she said, it appears that this woman still holds strong emotions for Luke, but acknowledges that her feelings towards Shannen may develop differently as they spend more time together. It’s a common experience to have deep connections with multiple people throughout one’s life. However, the depth and nature of these connections can shift and transform as we grow and learn new things about ourselves and our partners. In my own relationships, I’ve found that communication, trust, and mutual respect are key components in allowing feelings to deepen and mature over time. Ultimately, everyone’s romantic journey is unique, and it’s important to embrace the ebbs and flows of emotions as they come.
Spelling looked back on the memories she shared with Doherty, Perry and the cast of the series.
“I deeply value the experience of getting to know each of you throughout my life, an experience that is unique and incomprehensible to others as we often say, Jen. I’m content with this fact because I wouldn’t have wanted to share it with anyone else but all of you.”
The day following Doherty’s passing, Garth paid tribute to his late costar on Instagram, expressing how incredibly strong he found her to be.
Garth remarked, “Despite frequent conflicts, our bond was genuine and heartfelt. The adversity we faced didn’t change the foundation of our true connection – it thrived on respect and admiration for each other.”
I had the privilege of knowing a remarkable woman. Her courage, passion, determination, love, and generosity left an indelible mark on my heart. I was constantly inspired by her resilience in the face of adversity and her unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on those around her. Although she is no longer physically present, her spirit lives on in the memories we shared and the lessons she imparted. Her absence will be deeply felt, but I will honor her by carrying forward the values she embodied and continuing to make a difference in the world as she did.
