Jennie from Blackpink shines as a solo act with an eclectic set at Coachella

In simpler terms, without the support of a widely known HBO murder-vacation series, Jennie from Blackpink likely faced more challenges compared to other members during their recent solo concerts.

It’s quite an accomplishment that she managed to fill the Outdoor Theater with her audience, as her performance moved well beyond typical club pop music. Her set featured genre experiments and majestic ballads, which are now possible due to her solo career.

As a fervent admirer, I’d like to emphasize that there’s no rivalry between my bandmate Lisa and I at this festival. In fact, it’s quite the opposite – our individual successes complement each other beautifully. If anyone were to suggest otherwise, K-Pop fans would undoubtedly have some firm words to express their disagreement. To clarify, we both share impressive solo chart histories, and this weekend, Coachella has given us equally prominent slots, a clear testament to our individual stardoms that thrive independently.

Jennie’s album “Ruby” was widely praised for breaking free from the conventional K-Pop mold, showcasing her as a versatile singer. Although it didn’t entirely surprise or expose new aspects of her, it effectively demonstrated her extensive vocal range, moving seamlessly between retro R&B, contemporary club music, classic ballads, and dreamy soundscapes with an impressive ease.

Instead of embracing the lively, upbeat desert club tunes, Jennie and her energetic live band predominantly steered their performance towards a lane similar to Lauryn Hill’s style, such as on “With the IE (way up)”. This song sampled Jennifer Lopez’s iconic millennial hit about embodying true Jenny-ness. During the show, Kali Uchis joined Jennie for “Damn Right”, trading verses while honoring the song’s soulful essence with mutual respect for its cross-cultural appeal.

She delivered an outstanding performance singing “Handlebars” and adding attitude to “Mantra”. It’s no secret that she excels as a live performer, and during this set, she skillfully navigated across the stage while flawlessly executing challenging live music with style.

By the time she reached songs like “Jennie” (a bold exercise in personal branding that borders on avant-garde) and the dancey “Starlight,” which could easily stand alongside Charli XCX’s performance last night, it was clear she was capable of almost anything as a solo artist. Although Blackpink is planning a US stadium tour, for now, let’s appreciate these exciting, deeper explorations of their individual talents.
