Jenna Ortega reveals the iconic role she auditioned for when the 21-year-old actress was just 15 years old

During interviews for the much-awaited movie “Beetlejuice” remake, actress Jenna Ortega has shared that there was a memorable role in another project she missed out on.
In a chat with BuzzFeed Celeb, the 21-year-old actress, starring as Astrid Deetz (daughter of Lydia Deetz played by Winona Ryder) in the upcoming sequel, participated in a Q&A session focusing on puppies.
It came out that Ortega tried out for the part of Chani, which fans might find surprising, in the Dune films directed by Denis Villeneuve.
The actress shared that when she was approximately fifteen years old, I believe I tried out for the role in ‘Dune.’ However, she mentioned that the audition process was rather discreet.
“She mentioned that she had always been a huge admirer of that movie series, and when given the opportunity to interview Denis – one of her favorite directors – she was absolutely thrilled.”
When queried about the character she believed she tried out for during her audition, Ortega replied, “I believe it was Chani, possibly Zendaya’s role, but they weren’t explicitly stating that; everything was kept quite confidential.”
Back in January 2017, Villeneuve agreed to take on the directing roles for both parts of the Dune movies. However, he had other commitments that needed to be completed first, such as finishing Blade Runner 2049, before he could start working on the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel.
2018 marked the announcement that the adaptation would cover two movies, with Timothee Chalamet joining the cast that same year to portray the main character, Paul Atreides.
If Ortega had auditioned for the Chani role prior to September 2018, she would have been 15 years old at the time of the audition.
Back in January 2019, it was revealed that Zendaya would play Chani. Although her appearance in the 2021 film “Dune” will be limited, she is set to have a significant role in the sequel, “Dune: Part Two,” which is scheduled for release in 2024.

This year, the second installment of Dune, released as Dune: Part Two in 2024, generated a total revenue of $1 billion globally on a production budget of $190 million. Domestically, it earned approximately $282.1 million.
In a shift from her youthful roles, such as on the Disney Channel sitcom “Stuck in the Middle,” Ortega began shedding her child actor image by taking on more mature roles like “You” and “The Babysitter: The Killer Queen.”
In 2022, she made a significant breakthrough in the mainstream spotlight with the successful release of the film Scream and the highly acclaimed Netflix show titled Wednesday.
This year, Ortega has acted in a total of two films so far – “Miller’s Girl” alongside Martin Freeman, and the movie “Winter Spring Summer or Fall,” scheduled for release on September 5 in cinemas.
The movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” by her will be released in theaters tomorrow, specifically on September 6. In the future, we can expect “Klara and the Sun,” directed by Taika Waititi, to arrive in the year 2025.
She also has the second season of Wednesday coming in 2025, which started production back in May.
