Jenna Ortega opens up about her failed Dune audition
As a gamer with an eclectic taste in movies, I must confess that I find myself both envious and amused by the life experiences of these talented artists. Jenna Ortega, at just 15, auditioned for Chani in Dune, a role that eventually went to Zendaya. Though she didn’t land the part, her enthusiasm for Villeneuve’s work is inspiring and speaks volumes about her dedication as an artist.
Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has opened up about her failed audition for Dune.
In conversation with BuzzFeed, the actress shared that she had auditioned for a part in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi hit when she was just 15 years old.
She remembers believing it might have been Chani, or rather Zendaya’s character, but they didn’t confirm this – everything was kept under wraps.
Ortega expressed her eagerness, mentioning that she was thrilled about the opportunity to audition for Villeneuve, as he ranks among her most admired directors.
In 2021, the film adaptation titled Dune, drawn from the initial half of Frank Herbert’s novel with the same name, received rave reviews from critics. The sequel, Dune: Part Two, was released in March and has amassed an astounding $711.8 million worldwide box office revenue.
Based on the success of the first two films, Warner Bros. recently gave the go-ahead for a third movie in the series. It is said that Denis Villeneuve will be adapting Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel “Dune Messiah” for this upcoming film.
The threequel is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026.
In terms of Ortega, you can expect to see him in the upcoming film titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” alongside the returning Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. They will be portraying characters named Betelgeuse, Lydia, and Delia Deetz respectively.
In the next installment, Tim Burton resumes his role as director, focusing on Lydia, her spouse Rory (portrayed by Justin Theroux), and their child Astrid (Ortega). The story unfolds when Lydia encounters Betelgeuse yet another time.
In a recent interview, Keaton teased the long-awaited follow-up, sharing that the sequel has improved upon its predecessor with its character building.
“[It has] a stronger story,” he said. “There’s more of a connection for the audience in terms of the other characters. There’s things in here that I wasn’t ready for, that are beyond delightful.”
2021 has kept Ortega quite occupied. In the early part of the year, she starred in the controversial thriller “Miller’s Girl” alongside Martin Freeman, and later, she graced the screen in the romantic drama “Winter Spring Summer or Fall”.
She will once again play her iconic character, Wednesday Addams, in the upcoming second season of Netflix’s “Wednesday,” a show that’s now being actively produced.
Dune 3 is set to be released on December 18, 2026.
