J.J. Abrams’ new mystery film now has an official title. The movie, first announced in 2024, was previously known as Ghostwriter during production.
Recent listings by The Writers Guild of America (WGA) suggest the new movie from J.J. Abrams is tentatively titled The Great Beyond. While details are limited, the WGA website lists Abrams as the writer of the screenplay, as reported by World of Reel.
Details about the story of The Great Beyond are still secret, but the movie has a fantastic cast, including Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey, and Samuel L. Jackson.
What to Read Next
So, I heard about this new movie, and it sounds awesome! It’s about a famous fantasy author who lets slip that the world he writes about is actually real. That sends his main character, played by Powell, off on a huge adventure. I’m already hooked!
Filming finished last year, and the movie is now being edited and polished. While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, The Great Beyond will be Abrams’ first major film since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

Jenna Ortega is still working on many projects after the successful release of her popular Netflix series, Wednesday, which premiered last August.
The actor is set to appear alongside Natalie Portman in the upcoming thriller, The Gallerist, and will lead Taika Waititi’s film adaptation of Klara and the Sun. They are also in discussions to star in a remake of Single White Female.

Meanwhile, Powell recently fronted Edgar Wright’s remake of the dystopian thriller The Running Man.
Released in November 2025, the movie features Powell as Ben Richards, a man competing in a dangerous reality show. To win the prize money and afford life-saving treatment for his child, Ben must survive a relentless pursuit by assassins.
Next, Powell will star as Becket Redfellow in the darkly comedic film, How to Make a Killing. The movie centers on a possible heir to a vast fortune who must battle his family to claim the inheritance.
