Actor Jonathan Bailey was recently crowned People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive just before his new movie, Wicked: For Good, comes out. This is a landmark achievement, making him the first openly gay man to receive the title.
He’s set to play Fiyero again in the new movie, Wicked: For Good, and this role will likely solidify his status as a leading man. He’ll be playing the love interest to Cynthia Erivo’s character, Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. The film, directed by Jon M. Chu and based on the second half of the Wicked musical, also features Ariana Grande, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Colman Domingo, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.
After being named Sexiest Man Alive, Bailey told People magazine he was “incredibly honored and flattered, but also found it completely ridiculous.” He admitted he’d been keeping the news a secret and was looking forward to sharing it with loved ones. Bailey also discussed the announcement while promoting his new film, Wicked: For Good, with Jeff Goldblum.
While Jeff Goldblum playfully sang lines from “You Sexy Thing” and “I’m Too Sexy,” Luke Bailey discussed his groundbreaking win. “It’s totally crazy, amazing, and funny,” the Bridgerton star explained. “But I’m taking this role very seriously. I’m going to embrace my sex appeal for the next year, and I’m also representing everyone who feels sexy. I feel the pressure of living up to all the sexy men who came before me.”
Goldblum recognized the significance of Bailey’s title, playfully suggesting Bailey ‘stands on sexy shoulders.’ Bailey then stated that ‘nothing is sexier than progress,’ referring to his historic achievement as the first openly gay man to win the title, a comment that briefly puzzled his colleague.
The moment didn’t last, though, as Bailey quickly pointed out how significant Goldblum’s win was, and Goldblum enthusiastically agreed. The conversation then became lighthearted when Bailey shared a funny nickname for Goldblum: “I call him Bailey’s Cream. Bailey’s Cream.”
“If you exclude me, I spoil!” Bailey playfully responded. While promoting Wicked in 2024, Bailey and her co-star often gave funny interviews that showed off their easygoing relationship. The current promotional events for Wicked: For Good are continuing that lighthearted vibe, even though their characters are rivals in the movie.
