Jeff Baena, indie filmmaker and husband of Aubrey Plaza, dies at 47
As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic talents, I must confess that Jeff Baena’s untimely demise at 47 leaves me with a profound sense of loss. His unique storytelling voice and knack for crafting quirky, offbeat comedies were a breath of fresh air in an industry often bogged down by predictability.
Having attended NYU Film School myself, I can appreciate the journey Baena embarked upon, starting from the same hallowed halls where countless filmmakers have honed their craft. His collaboration with Aubrey Plaza on “The Little Hours” and his co-writing of David O. Russell’s “I Heart Huckabees” are testaments to his versatility and adaptability in various creative environments.
It is indeed a sad day for independent cinema, but I choose to remember Jeff Baena not just for his tragic ending, but for the laughter he brought into our lives through his work. I’ll leave you with this little jest of mine: May his next directorial project be in the best location… Heaven’s editing suite! Rest in peace, Mr. Baena. Your stories will continue to entertain us.
Independent movie director Jeff Baena, best known for working with his wife Aubrey Plaza on “The Little Hours” and collaborating with David O. Russell on “I Heart Huckabees,” tragically passed away at the age of 47.
I regretfully report that on January 3rd, I, the movie critic, bid farewell to the talented filmmaker, Baena, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office. The specific reason for his passing, at this time, remains undisclosed.
Hailing from June 29, 1977, Baena pursued his filmmaking passion at New York University’s film school and recently took the helm for the 2022 movie “Spin Me Round,” featuring the talented Alison Brie in the leading role.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
