Jean Smart wins lead actress in a comedy for 'Hacks,' her sixth Emmy overall

As a seasoned movie critic with decades of industry experience under my belt, I must say that Jean Smart’s Emmy win for “Hacks” is nothing short of extraordinary. Her portrayal of Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas stand-up comedian, is a testament to her unparalleled acting prowess and versatility.

Jean Smart was awarded the Emmy in the category of Lead Comedy Actress for her exceptional portrayal of Deborah Vance, a renowned stand-up comedian from Las Vegas, in “Hacks.

She has clinched her third comedy-related victory for her performance in Max, marking her sixth Emmy award in total. Earlier, she was awarded twice as a guest actress on “Frasier” and once more for her role in the supporting category of a comedy series titled “Samantha Who?”.

He found it deeply touching and acknowledged that he doesn’t often receive such recognition,” Smart said as he accepted the award on Sunday evening at the Peacock Theater in LA.

She subsequently expressed gratitude towards the creators of the “Hacks” series, namely Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, in addition to her long-term agent, Scott Henderson, who is stepping down and causing me great sorrow.

“Scott, let me express my affection for you and my hopes for your success. Instead of standing by my side, he’s chosen to bike through France,” she went on with her speech reminiscent of Deborah Vance.

2023 saw “Smart” surpassing last year’s champion, Ayo Edebiri from “The Bear”, thereby breaking FX comedy’s potential sweep in the top comedy categories. The delay in production due to two Hollywood strikes meant that “Hacks” didn’t compete in 2023, but it returned to Max in May for its third season, which was its most critically-acclaimed one so far. Conceived by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky, the show revolves around the complex relationship between Deborah Vance, an aging comedian reminiscent of Joan Rivers, and Ava Daniels (played by Hannah Einbinder), a younger writer assisting Deborah in modernizing her outdated act.

In Season 3, Deborah’s professional journey soared with her pursuit of a prestigious late-night talk show host position. However, she was held responsible for some inappropriate jokes from her past, and her bond with Ava encountered fresh hurdles.

As a longtime fan, it’s been truly captivating to witness the career resurgence of Jean Smart, who initially rose to fame portraying the innocent Charlene on the iconic CBS sitcom “Designing Women.” To my delight, she has amassed an impressive 13 Emmy nominations so far.

“Hacks” was nominated for 17 Emmys this year, including comedy series.
