Jean Marsh, Co-Creator & Star of ‘Upstairs, Downstairs,’ Dies at 90

Actress Jean Marsh, a beloved figure from Britain, passed away recently at the age of 90. She was renowned for co-creating and playing significant roles in the classic period series ‘Upstairs, Downstairs‘.

On Sunday, it was confirmed by her dear friend, filmmaker Michael Lindsay-Hogg, that the award-winning actress passed away tranquilly at her residence in London.

The cause of death was reported as complications from dementia.

In the 1970s, Jean gained widespread recognition for her remarkable appearance and strong persona, primarily due to her memorable portrayal of Rose Buck – a stern yet kind-hearted chief housekeeper – in the beloved ITV show that unfolded during Edwardian England.

The innovative series “Upstairs, Downstairs” held viewers spellbound on both sides of the ocean.

The show first broadcast from 1971 to 1975 in the UK, and then from 1974 to 1977 in the US. It attracted countless viewers well before Downton Abbey revived interest in aristocratic dramas once more.

In addition to playing a leading role in the show, Marsh was also a significant creative influence, collaborating on the creation of the program that explored the lives of the affluent Bellamy family and their devoted household staff residing together under a luxurious roof in a prestigious Belgravia mansion.

1975 saw a remarkable performance by her as Rose, which landed her the distinguished Primetime Emmy Award for Exceptional Lead Actress in a Drama Series – one of the seven Primetime Emmys the series eventually won, also earning a respected Peabody Award.

1974 saw critics falling head over heels for her performance. In a radiant New York Times review, television critic John J. O’Connor described the series as “an irresistibly alluring mixture” and praised Marsh’s portrayal of Rose as reaching “the pinnacle of Mildred Dunnock’s youthful essence.

In the latter part of her life, I found myself enamored with maintaining a guarded existence, yet I was adored by countless generations of spectators and peers within the realm of British television. My skill and innovative spirit, it seemed, left an indelible mark on the industry, making me an icon whose talent transcended time.

She has bequeathed an impactful body of work that significantly reshaped period dramas, opening up opportunities for series such as Downton Abbey and The Crown to emerge.
