Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the fifth episode of the Scrubs revival, “My Angel.” Throughout its original run, Scrubs featured many memorable storylines, but one truly stands out. This incredible arc began with the very first episode in 2001 and continued all the way through the series finale in Season 8. Though it briefly continued in the later Med School episodes (Season 9), those installments are now considered non-canon. The recent Scrubs revival has successfully brought the show back to its peak, and it’s been surprisingly effective in doing so.
I have to say, even though plenty of shows have done the ‘will they/won’t they’ thing, JD and Elliot’s relationship on Scrubs is one of my favorites. It felt like the show knew their complicated love story had to end happily, but it still kept me guessing for a long time! The season finale gave us that happy ending, but it was surprisingly low-key – no big wedding or proposal. It’s been fun to learn through the revival that a lot did happen off-screen, and it’s brought all those feelings from their eight seasons rushing back. And now, seeing a similar story unfold with a new couple feels like a really cool continuation of that whole arc.
“My Angel” Revives JD & Elliot’s Will-They/Won’t-They ‘Scrubs’ Storyline

Given how determined the Scrubs revival is to undo the events of Med School, it makes sense that J.D. and Elliot start the new season divorced. The question of whether they’d eventually reunite was a major part of the original Scrubs storyline, and showing them happily together now wouldn’t have felt right. While many fans are upset by this choice, it’s actually a brilliant move. We haven’t yet learned why they grew apart, but they did. The fact that they’ve been successfully co-parenting their son, Ollie, means they’ve remained in each other’s lives, and now working together again at Sacred Heart is forcing them to confront the reasons their marriage failed.
The fifth episode of the Scrubs revival, “My Angel,” focuses on JD and Elliot trying to date again after their divorce. While this could have emphasized their separation, it actually suggested the opposite. During a particularly awkward and intense date with the hospital harpist, JD has a flashback to an early Scrubs episode, clearly showing he’s still struggling with the breakup. This isn’t unexpected, considering Elliot was the one who initiated the divorce, so it makes sense that JD is having a harder time adjusting than she is.
It looks like JD is finally ready to tell Elliot how he feels, but the episode ends with a really frustrating twist – Elliot immediately connects with the pilot who brought in the liver for her patient! It’s so clear JD wants to try again, but Elliot doesn’t seem to notice, and honestly, there hasn’t been much to suggest she feels the same way. That emotional scene in “My Rom-Com” showed she still loves him, but it also feels like she’s holding onto something really painful that she can’t or won’t deal with. This time, their potential relationship feels different, more complicated, but the tension is definitely still there – will they or won’t they?
The ‘Scrubs’ Revival Has a Second Will-They-Won’t They Couple

Similar to its predecessor, Med School, the Scrubs revival has introduced a new group of doctors. However, these new characters mostly play supporting roles, unlike in Med School. Still, the recent episodes have given them some interesting storylines. For instance, Ava Bunn’s character, Dr. Sam Tosh, had a major focus in the episode “Poker Face.” While the other interns haven’t been featured as prominently, they’ve been kept busy with various plotlines. One particularly engaging subplot revolves around the potential romance between Asher (Jacob Dudman) and Amara (Layla Mohammadi). Initially, Scrubs led viewers to believe that all Asher needed to do was ask Amara out and she would say yes, but the reality is much more complicated.
The latest episode of Scrubs complicated things by strongly suggesting Amara now has feelings for Blake. To make matters worse, Asher, who is very shy, found out and decided to avoid potential heartbreak by not asking Amara out. Although this potential romance between Asher and Amara likely won’t be as long-lasting as the one between JD and Elliot, it’s been well-developed so far and nicely mirrors the show’s most iconic relationship.
This new romantic tension differs from the will-they/won’t-they dynamic between JD and Elliot in the original series because the current love triangle involves three of the show’s main characters. In the past, while JD often felt jealous of Elliot’s dates, those boyfriends were typically guest stars and rarely worked at the hospital. This Blake, Amara, and Asher situation adds a new layer to the show’s successful formula. Now, it’s just a matter of seeing how Scrubs will ultimately resolve both of its current romantic storylines.
