Jay-Z defended his daughter, Blue Ivy, after some people questioned whether she earned her spot as a backup dancer on Beyoncé’s latest world tours.
In a recent and unusual interview with GQ, the 56-year-old rapper spoke up to praise his 14-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy, and her strong work ethic.
In 2023 and 2025, the teen performed alongside their mother, Beyoncé, during both the Renaissance and Cowboy Carter concert tours.
Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, explained that his daughter blossomed between the first and second tours.
He remembered that during her initial performances, everyone talked about how much effort she’d put in, but she didn’t seem fully engaged. She was just going through the motions, not really giving it her all.
It was the first time I’d seen her truly stand up for herself. She usually has things come easily, but this time she really had to fight for what she wanted.
The father also mentioned he carefully chose the songs he allowed his daughter to dance to, wanting to make sure they were appropriate.
He said she was trying to be involved in everything, and he had to stop her from getting too close during certain parts of the show. For example, he told her she couldn’t be on stage while Beyoncé was performing the song about ‘Six-inch heels,’ questioning her judgment.
In addition to Blue, Jay-Z and Beyonce share fraternal twins Rumi and Sir, eight.
The father-of-three described witnessing Blue’s growth as a performer ‘amazing.’
He also mentioned that his eldest child is a very talented pianist, but prefers to learn on her own and doesn’t want lessons, as she doesn’t want playing the piano to feel like work.
He excitedly explained that she has an incredible ear for music. If she hears a song even once, she can immediately figure it out and play it back – it’s a natural gift, not something she has to practice, he said.
The rapper spoke about her work as a dancer, saying she’s proud of the dedication and effort she put into pursuing her passion.
‘I don’t think we’re going to be able to get her off that stage now.’
In a recent magazine interview, Jay-Z discussed how much he values being a father and having a family. He explained that it’s the most important thing in his life, saying he’ll travel anywhere for work and immediately return home to be with them.
He added about being a dad, ‘I love taking them to school. I love picking them up.’
According to a source who spoke with Daily Mail in May 2025, Blue dedicated almost six months to intense tour rehearsals. She practiced for hours each day with renowned choreographer Amari Marshall, all while still attending school.
According to a source, she grew up around Beyoncé’s dancers and developed her passion for dance from watching them.
She’s been training with Amari and began practicing right before Christmas. She’s been putting in six hours of rehearsal each day, balancing it with her schoolwork, and has also been learning by watching videos of her mom online.
According to a source, Beyoncé was involved in the artistic choices for the Cowboy Carter tour.
