Jay Leno gets a kick out of wife’s $847 sneakers: ‘Find your moments where you can have a laugh’

Jay Leno expresses little interest in the bedazzled $847 sneakers he purchased, but if they bring joy to his wife, he finds them pleasing as well.

Previously known “Tonight Show” host shared an account of a recent shopping outing with his wife Mavis, who’s dealing with advanced dementia. He confessed to trying to find some laughter amidst the challenging circumstances.

Jay Leno indicates that his wife, Mavis Leno, is doing well and everyone is in good health following the establishment of a will and conservatorship based on her diagnosis of dementia.

The “circumstance” here refers to the philanthropist’s deteriorating mental abilities, leading comedian Leno to initiate a conservatorship application last year for his wife’s wellbeing. In delivering the recent news about Mavis’ health status, the renowned comedy legend used his characteristic humor.

In a recent chat with People, the “Midas Man” actor shared that to put a smile on his wife’s face one day, they went shopping together at Nordstrom.

In a turn of events, Mavis, who is 78 years old, selected a vibrant pair of blue sneakers priced at $24. Later on, Leno motivated her to choose another pair, and this time she opted for a cheerful red-and-white design that brought a smile to her face.

He stated, “That will be $24 for this pair, and the other one is $847,” he told me. I replied, “I believed I only purchased two pairs of sneakers, and I thought they were all priced at $24.” He responded, “Yes, these are indeed $24. However, the other ones are designer sneakers. It appears someone added some bling to a regular pair using a bedazzler, making them $800. I turned to my wife and asked, ‘Do you like these?’ To which I replied, ‘My dear, you look fantastic.’

Mavis Leno has been diagnosed with ‘severe dementia,’ and there are instances when she cannot recognize her husband, Jay Leno, or recall her birthdate, as stated by her legal representative in court.

Although the high cost of those shoes took Leno by surprise, he was still pleased that he could afford them, and found their price amusing enough to laugh about.

He remarked, “It’s just the usual…”, indicating that when handling such situations, there are instances where one can find humor and enjoyment. His wife particularly appreciated these moments and felt uplifted by them.

Jay Leno, alongside his wife Mavis, have been married for over four decades. In January 2024, the host of “Jay Leno’s Garage” requested a conservatorship over her estate in order to establish a living trust and other estate arrangements aimed at ensuring Mavis receives adequate financial support if he were to pass away before her. This petition stated that Mavis has been experiencing gradual decline in cognitive abilities, including memory loss, for several years.

Based on court records submitted to Los Angeles County Superior Court in the spring, Mavis Leno’s lawyer appointed by the court reported findings from his investigation into Jay Leno’s bid to become a permanent conservator. He revealed that Mavis suffers from severe neurocognitive disorders, cognitive impairment, and often struggles to recognize her husband, Jay, or remember her own birthday. It is not clear when she was diagnosed, but the documents state that she is receiving treatment for advanced stages of dementia and a mood disorder.

At the unveiling of the first Mavis Leno Honor for Women’s Global Rights, Jay Leno shows emotion as he speaks, since this award bears the name of his spouse who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

Towards the end of April, Mavis Leno attended the premiere of the Netflix movie “Unfrosted” alongside her husband, and expressed her delight by saying, “We’re really enjoying ourselves. We’ve been married for 44 years now, so things are going well for us.

Approximately a few weeks past, the two-time Emmy Award recipient, Jay Leno, expressed that marrying Mavis was his most significant accomplishment and considered it “the wisest decision I’ve made.

As I stood on stage at the Feminist Majority Foundation’s 16th Global Women’s Rights Awards Gala, presenting the first Mavis Leno Award for Global Women’s Rights, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of pride. You see, I am honored to be part of her legacy, a legacy that extends far beyond myself. It is this association that I hold closest to my heart.

Mavis Leno, through her tireless work as chair of the nonprofit’s Campaign for Afghan Women and Girls, has been nominated for the Nobel Prize. Her philanthropic efforts have made a significant impact on women’s rights globally, and it is an honor to dedicate this award to her.
