Jason’s Back! ‘Crystal Lake’ Filming Update Will Slash Your Doubts

The prequel series for A24’s “Friday the 13th,” titled “Crystal Lake,” has received significant filming updates from creator Brad Caleb Kane. This upcoming streaming series on Peacock delves into events preceding the infamous camp counselor massacre depicted in the original 1980 movie, focusing on Linda Cardellini’s portrayal of Jason Voorhees’ mother Pamela, who is also a notorious killer. The “Friday the 13th”-inspired “Crystal Lake” is anticipated to explore Pamela’s tenure as a counselor at the movie series’ notorious summer camp, uncovering hidden mysteries about the secluded location.

For the small town of Crystal Lake, the future hasn’t always looked promising, but with the skilled leadership of showrunner Kane at the helm, things are starting to look optimistic. Recently, he shared a hopeful message on Instagram about the show’s progress.

In Kane’s latest post, it appears he’s sharing an episode script, accompanied by a laptop adorned with a Jason sticker and a notebook. The script stands out as it suggests that a production draft has been finalized. Notably, the date on the script is March 26, 2025, hinting that Kane completed this work in March of that year. Kane’s caption reads:

Crystal Lake Production offices are live. It’s all happening. MACHETES FOR EVERYONE!

What This Means For Crystal Lake

It’s A Comeback For Friday The 13th

The enduring slasher series “Friday the 13th” faced years of uncertainty due to legal battles over rights, much like its main character Jason Voorhees who wears a hockey mask. Yet, just as Jason is seemingly unstoppable, so too persists “Friday the 13th.” After resolving the legal hurdles, 2022 marked the announcement of a new series titled “Crystal Lake,” with Bryan Fuller of “Hannibal” fame taking charge. However, optimism gave way to apprehension when Fuller departed from the project in early 2024.

It turned out that rumors of Crystal Lake’s destruction were exaggerated, as A24 continued to show interest in the prequel project even after Fuller left. Not long afterwards, Kane from Welcome to Derry was appointed as the new manager for the series. Besides successfully bringing Stephen King’s cursed Maine town to life through his IT prequel series, Kane, who is a fan of Friday the 13th, expressed in a statement that he has always been keen on horror genres, strengthening his reputation within the genre.

Since I first witnessed Jason Voorhees pop out a man’s eyeball at age 8 (an unforgettable 3D experience!), I’ve felt an inevitable connection between my creative journey and the man behind that mask. My childhood was profoundly shaped by the slasher film era, and there’s no denying that ‘Friday The 13th’ epitomizes this genre. Working on a chapter for this legendary series with bold partners like Peacock and A24 is an exciting prospect I can hardly wait to embark upon!

Our Take On Kane’s Crystal Lake Update

More News Should Be Coming Soon

So far, only one piece of casting information has been shared for the movie “Crystal Lake,” with the actress from “Freaks and Geeks” named as Pamela Voorhees. After Kane’s recent hint on social media, it looks like the filming start date is imminent, and we might hear more about that soon. It’s likely that additional casting news will also be announced shortly, possibly including who will play the young Jason character.

The enigma surrounding Crystal Lake fuels anticipation, but as the project advances towards its Peacock debut, the shroud of secrecy will gradually lift. A24 appears dedicated to moving forward with the show, having brought on Kane to take over from Fuller. Let’s hope that the project maintains its momentum, paving the way for the Friday the 13th series to break free from its lengthy slumber and return to our screens with a vengeance, revealing fresh insights into the origins of Pamela and Jason.

Crystal Lake does not yet have a release date from Peacock.
